When the pressing velocity of the pressure roll in ring rolling is to be considered properly, a dual velocity field should be used in order to make a better estimation of the required torque and pressing load. A kinematically admissible velocity field is derived in this study by superimposing the pressing velocity components to the circumferential velocity components of the ring induced by the driven roll. A simple method of analysis using force polygon diagrams is proposed for determining roll torque and pressing load in the plane-strain ring rolling processes. Pressing velocity together with driven roll rotation is incorporated in constructing the hodograph for the upper-bound analysis in order to find an optimized tangential velocity pattern. The results from two types of tangential velocity discontinuity patterns and related force polygon diagrams are compared at optimized values. It is shown that this method can be efficiently used for predicting pressing load and roll torque in ring rolling; the method has a flexibility and simplicity which recommends it for engineering analytical purposes and for explaining related phsical phenomena. In the ring rolling process most of the required forming energy is transferred from the roll into the deforming region by the aid of friction between the roll surface and the ring. In this study a new concept of ""equivalent"" coefficient of friction($\mu_{eq}$.) is proposed, which is the ratio of frictional force of the driven roll to pressing load of the pressure roll. Considering ring geometry and kinematics, the contact length is precisely calculated and the relationship between equivalent coefficient of friction and process parameters is derived. The effects of various process parameters on equivalent coefficient of friction in ring rolling are then discussed. In the ring rolling process, there are various important process parameters including the pressing velocity of the pressure roll, the peripheral velocity of the driven roll, the radius of the pressure roll, ring blank sizes and roll surface condition, etc. The relationship for these process parameters is derived, and the influence of the process parameters, especially the pressing velocity of the pressure roll and the rotational speed of the driven roll on the required power is investigated. An upper bound approach using a dual velocity field is employed in formulating the relationship of the process parameters. A recently developed computerized ring rolling machine was used for the experimental work. The machine can be controlled automatically and precisely in velocity, load and position of the pressure roll by aid of the hydraulic servo system. Experiments were carried out with AISI 1045 steel blanks at the elevated temperature. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental values.
