Austenitic stainless steel has excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance for Cr₂O₃protective film on surface. In this study, oxidation behavior of 304, 316 and 321 stainless steels were studied. After solution treatment, specimens were polished up to 1㎛ Al₂O₃grade and then subjected to oxidation treatment in dry air. Two range of temperature was used for oxidaton treatment; low temp. range(300℃, 500℃) and high temp. range (800℃, 1000℃, 1200℃). To study oxidation behavior at low temperature, TEM was used for analyzing the components and structure of oxide film. Also, these results were compared with the results of ESCA. To study oxidation behavior at high temperature, components and structure of oxide scale were analyzed with SEM, EDS and XRD. According to the results of TEM analysis after low temperature oxidation treatment, it was founded that thin amorphous Fe oxide was formed on top of surface and polycrystalline (Cr,Fe)₂O₃was formed below the amorphous Fe oxide layer. The specimens oxidized at 500℃ showed that 316 stainless steel resists more strongly to grain and grain boundary oxidation than 304 and 321 stainless steel. These results suggested that Mo component resolved in 316 stainless steel matrix suppressed the formation of Cr carbide which may results in local Cr deplete area. When oxidation treatment was conducted at 1200℃, large thickness of Fe oxide scale was formed on top of surface and fine (Cr,Fe)₂O₃oxide film was formed below it. Cr rich zone existed at interface between metal and (Cr,Fe)₂O₃oxide layer, and it was believed that this zone acted as obstacle to oxidation. At the specimen oxidized at high temperature such as 1200℃ Ti was detected at oxide island on large oxide scale of 321 stainless steel, and it was concluded that Ti has negligible effect on resistance to oxidation. Most of Ni was detected at the interface between metal and (Cr,Fe)₂O₃and also detected at the interface between Fe₂O₃and (Cr,Fe)₂O₃.
