The Unaccusative Hypothesis(UH), as first formulated by Perlmutter(1978), and developed in Burzio(1981, 1986)'s work, is a syntactic hypothesis which claims that there are two classes of intransitive verbs, the unaccusative/unergative verbs in natural language. Since the introduction of the UH, a wide range of phenomena in various languages have been studied which purport to distinguish between unaccusative and unergative verbs. However, the question of whether unaccusative verbs exist in Korean is still open. In this thesis, I show that Unaccusative Constructions(UC) exist in Korean and furnish several pieces of evidence that the UC can identify by ferreting out diagnostics for unaccusativity. Within the theoretical framework of Government and Binding approach, I analyze that UC in Korean are systematically distinct in their syntactic behavior from superficially similar unergative constructions. This implies that further an essential distinctions between unaccusative/unergative constructions are necessary in Korean. After introducing the basic issues in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 present by recapitulating the evidence from other languages and explore the syntactic characteristics of UC as prototypical. Chapter 3, I will provide empirical arguments in favor of diagnostics for determining unaccusativity e.g., case alternation phenomenon in duration/frequency adverbs and long form negation constructions, serial verb constructions with object sharing. The result equates neatly with UH. The second part of this chapter will be shown that subject to object raising, numeral quantifier floating and internally headed relative clauses are turn out to be inadequate when UCs in Korean are taken into consideration. Chapter 4 provides and overview of the previous chapters and concludes this thesis.
