Maackia fauriei Nakai, the Korean endemic Leguminosae plant, is a deciduous tree with exposed, scaled bud and native to Cheju island of Korea. The Subtribus Sophorinae plants of the family Leguminosae consists of the genus Maackia, the genus Cradrastis and the genus Baphia. Of these three genera, Maackia and Cladrastis kmown to be rich in isoflavonoids are no real distinction in their taxonomical characters. The only clear distinction between the two genera is the leaflets opposite or nearly so in the genus Maackia and the leaflets alternate in the genus Cladrastis. Isoflavonoids are very interested in one of the important plant chemotaxonomical characters and the medicinal resources. The present study is an attempt to isolate isoflavonoids from the heartwoods of Maackia fauriei Nakai and to give the preliminary data for the chemotaxonomy and the medicinal application. The plant materials used in this study were collected in August of 1994 from Cheju island of Korea. The CHCl_(3)-soluble extract of MeOH extract from the heartwood of this plant materials was subjected to silica gel column chromatography with hexane-EtOAc(1 : 1) as mobile phase to give 8 subfractions. From these subfractions, 6 flavonoids were isolated by rechromatography and their chemical structures were identified by their spectral data and physicochemical studies. These compounds are a new isoflavonoid, 2'-methoxy-4', 6-dihydroxyisoflavone, in addition to the known compounds, 4',7-di-hydroxyflavon, genistein, retusin, afromosin and dehydroferreirin.
