This study is an attempt to trace the process of emotional information. Affective primacy effect was first explored in experiment 1 and 2, to be replicated as Murphy and Zajonc(1993) had found with affective priming paradigm. On rating Hebraic alphabets, assimilation was found in the subliminal priming condition of experiment 1 with facial primes as well as in the equivalent condition of experiment 2 with event primes. However, assimilation to the valence of priming stimuli could not be observed when priming stimuli could be presented to be consciously perceived. The effects caused by affective primes were examined to be reflected on the reaction time to make a gender judgement of a target person with a smiling or a scowling face. As a result, the judgement was made faster when the affectivity of a prime was consistent with that of a target face than in the inconsistent as well as neutral conditions regardless of the prime being semantic or event-pictorial. Also, this facilitation on the reaction time due to emotion congruence was found conspicuous not only in subliminal conditions but also in supraliminal conditions. A spreading effect occurred by a subject's being emotionally overwhelmed was observed in the experiment 4 and 5. At the 5000msec exposure condition long enough l o make strong arousal with a picture prime of an emotional event, the assimilation showed up again to the valence of a prime as a subliminal priming pattern did. However, unlike subliminal facial priming, the assimilation was not found at the 5000msec facial exposure. On the measure of reaction time to make a judgement, the interaction between the valence of a prime and exposure duration was statistically significant when event picture was presented as a prime. However, the same result was not observed when facial prime was used. Finally the characteristics of emotional processing had been discussed.
