Reaction between SiO vapor and activated Carbon fiber Composites (ACFCs) impregnated with Ce nitrate was studied by BET method, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscope and wet chemical analysis techniques. The main attention was focused on the role of silicon carbide from gas-solid reaction.
Four groups of ACFCs, prepared and impregnated with Ce nitrate in this study, were investigated in which the Ce content was varied from 3 to 10 wt% of Ce. In addition, ACFC samples without Ce nitrate impregnation were also studied.
The reaction between SiO vapor and ACFCs was carried out at two different temperatures, 1250℃ and 1400℃, for hold time ranging from 2 to 10 hr.
From the phase analysis by XRD measurements and by HF treatment and oxidation of reaction products, it has been found that amorphous phase and cerium compound such as CeN and Ce(5)Si-(3)O(12)N retarded the formation of Silicon carbide by SiO-C reaction at 1250℃. The specific surface areas of the reacted sample impregnated with Ce nitrate were ranged from 50 to 200 ㎡/g, and depended on the Ce content and hold time at reaction temperature.
Reacted sample without Ce impregnation showed the specific surface areas of about 50~130 ㎡/g, which linearly decreased with increasing hold time. This reduction of the specific surface area resulted from the grain growth of SiC crystals, which was also confirmed from the results of SiC yield measurement with variation of hold tame.
ACFCs reacted at 1400℃ apparently showed an increase in specific surface area from about 130 to 50 ㎡/g by increasing Ce content up to 7%. The observed increase in the specific surface area of ACFCs reacted with SiO vapor was assigned to a formation of the Ce compound and the amorphous SiO-O-N-C phase prior to the silicon carbide crystal.
It is concluded that Ce nitrate in an effective additive for the activated carbon fiber which is converted to high specific surface of area SiC catalyst support by gas-solid reaction.
