Diode and triode-type diamond field emitter arrays are fabricated using transfer mold technique and self-aligning process. An inverted pyramidal mold of micron size was formed on (100) silicon substrate using conventional photo lithography and anisotropic etching along (111) plane. A diamond film thicker than 100 ㎛ was grown on the mold, so that the film could be a free standing film with the diamond tip array after etching away the mold. A silicon dioxide and molybdenum (Mo) layers were deposited conformally on the diamond tip array as an insulating and a gate layer, respectively. A flat photo-resist (PR) layer was then coated. The PR layer on top of the tip was thinner than the surrounding area. Therefore, the uniform removal of the PR layer exposed the apex of the tips while the rest of the surface was still covered with PR. The remaining PR layer around the tips acted as a mask for the etching of the Mo and silicon oxide layers covering the diamond tips. As a result, a diamond emitter array with a Mo gate was fabricated. We also found that a proper treatment of the diamond tips with hydrogen could substantially improve the emission. We also fabricated an array of cone-shaped diamond tips for use as a field electron emitter by air-plasma etching of a polycrystalline diamond film with a silicon oxide mask. The difference in the etching speed between the mask and the diamond resulted in the formation of cone-shaped diamond tips. Post-treatment using hydrogen plasma was effective in cleaning the diamond tips and increasing the surface conductivity. The emission from the diamond tips was measured with a diode configuration. The threshold field was 3 V/ ㎛, and the emission current was 0.8 nA/tip when the field was raised to 10 V/ ㎛. And densely packed diamond whiskers aligned in the same direction are formed by air plasma etching of polycrystalline diamond films. The shape and the density of the whiskers were sensitive to the substrate temperature, chamber pressure, bias voltage, power, and the amount of Mo. We could fabricate sharp diamond whisker which were 0.1/㎛ in diameter and 3㎛ high with the density of 30 per ㎛².
