Degradation and removal of environmental pollutants by photooxidation is an attractive method. In this study, many kinds of organic dyes were degraded by photooxidation with TiO₂ in aqueous solution, and the relationship of photocatalytic activities of variable photocatalysts, processsing conditions (molar ratio of water to alkoxide (R-value) and heat treatment temperature), microstructures (crystalline phases) and properties (surface area and particle size) was examined. The result was that photocatalytic activities of photocatalysts made by various methods were examined : chlorination (Degussa P-25 and Aldrich TiO₂), sulfurization(Korea Titanium TiO₂), TiO(OH)₂ recrystallization, sol-gel method, emulsion/extraction method. Different particle size and specific surface area were significantly variable according to preparation methods. Processing conditions and properties of photocatalyst for improving the photocatalytic activity for dye degradation in aqueous solution was determined : R-value 100, temperature of heat treatment 500 C, anatase phase, average particle size 270 nm, surface area 26 m₂/g. Organic dyes selected in this work was easily degradable, but dyes that have a relatively stronger chromaticity need more degradation time. In the degradation of dye solutions, initial reaction rate decreased proportionally as the initial concentration of dye solution increased, and increased to proportion to I^0.5, increased proportionally as the amount of photocatalysts. Stirring speed didn't significantly affect initial reaction rate over the minimum stirring speed for good dispersion of photocatalysts.
