Polymeric materials have been used in various medical applications for a long time, often in situations where there are intimate contacts with living tissues. Although the specific requirements from those materials will differ according to the nature of the application, it is a fundamental requirement in each and every case that the polymer should display adequate biocompatibility. The material must be degraded within the body environment, nor should it have any adverse effect on the tissue and for intentionally degradable artifact and degradation product should be physiologically tolerable. In this study, biodegradable films were prepared by solution blend method in the weight ratio of natural polymers(xanthan gum, locust bean gum, guar gum, chitosan, algin) for the purpose of producing useful biomaterials. The possibility of biomaterials prepared from natural polymer as a skin substitute was evaluated by measuring biocompatibility. These biodegradable films were inserted in the back of rats and their biodegradability was investigated by the evaluation of changes in structural, film weight and hematology as a function of time for the biotransformation. The result of rats test showed that guar gum and some chitosan induced incrementation of monocyte and basophil 48 and 72 hours after implantation. Locust bean gum showed increases of monocyte and neutrophile counts 48 hours after implantation. And medium viscosity chitosan showed increase in lymphocyte and decreased neutrophil counts 72 hours after implantation. Locust bean gum and medium, high viscosity chitosan induced some suspects of inbiocompatibility in the tissue by foreign body reaction 48 and 72 hours after implantation. As a result, depending on the living tissues, the dominant factors determining degradability were chemical and physical properties such as degree of crystallinity, T_g(glass transition of temperature), calories and surfaces properties etc. of natural polymer. These values measured in this study showed the potential of partial biodegradable films prepared from natural polymer for ideal skin biomaterials at short period. Based on previous result, we prepared the official burn ointment which is made by natural polymer. This bum ointment was covered on the skin wound of artificial burn and their effect of healing was investigated by the evaluation of histological and hematological change as a function of time. The result of rats test showed that burn ointments made from natural polymer were effective in formation of the new tissue and reduction of inflammation.
