This study is on origin of woodblock printing by investigation on publication information of the Mugujoˇnggwangdaedaranigyoˇng(or the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng) found in the Soˇkgat'ap(釋迦塔) at the Pulguksa(佛國寺). Chinese academic circle insists that the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng(無垢淨經) was translated into Chinese in 701 A.D., sculpted in Loyang(洛陽) in 702 A.D., and the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng found in the Sbkkatap was a woodblock print transferred from China into Kyoˇngju(慶州). This study investigates publication information of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from Sbkkatap thus reveals Chinese allegation is erroneous as follows: First, the translation year of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng into Chinese was turned out to be 704 A.D. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the time spent on translation was less than a month, and period of transfer of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng into Korea was confirmed to be late in 704 A.D. The penmanship of main text of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap has characteristics of disordered composition and alignment it thus proves that main-text-writer(經筆師) who wrote the main text of original manuscript(底本) of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap and title-writer(經題筆師) who wrote the title at the end of the book() were different persons. Second, penmanship of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was put into comparison with the penmanship of Chinese successive generations. As a result it was noticeable that the penmanship of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was similar to the sculpting record of Buddha(造像記) in the Period of North and South Dynasties(南北朝: 北魏) in China or 'the mourning stone tablet for crane's death(좌학명)'. On the other hand it was pointed out that the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng could not be published in the capital city of Tang Dynasty(唐朝 長安) or in Loyang(洛陽)by primitive style of writing of the Period of North and South Dynasties in China because the printed style of writing(楷書) in Chinese was formalized and in peak of development by strong policy on writing style(書法政策) of Li Shi-Min(李世民: 唐 太宗) and OiuYang xun's(歐陽詢) influence in 7th Century in China. Therefore it is confirmed that the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng was not published in the center of Chinese culture in 8th Century. Third, penmanship of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was put into comparison with the style of writing in Korea before and after 660's. Resultingly the penmanship of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap and the style of the Three Countries Era in Korea(三國時代) shows common factor, specifically strong resemblance to the style of writing of the (鳳坪 新羅碑) and the (冷水里 新羅碑). Therefore it is proved that the penmanship of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was from traditional style of writing of Shills(新羅), 'the Shilla Penmanship (新羅書體). Therefore possibility that the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was printed in Shilla region turns out to be a fact. Fourth, having noticed that the paper on which the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was Broussonetia Kazinoki Siebold(楮紙), produced under the Tochim(搗砧) process, it is confirmed that the paper used for printing the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was Broussonetia Kazinoki Siebold(楮紙) produced in Shilla, by introducing the common fact that the papers on which (wriitten in 755 A.D.) and in Soˇochu˘ng-soˇkt'ap at Hwaoˇmsa(華嚴寺 西五層石塔) were written were the same paper fabricated by the Tochirn(搗砧) process. Therefore it is proved that the printing place of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was also Kyoˇngju(慶州) region in Shilla. Furthermore it is proved that the year of storing Broussonetia Kazinoki Siebold on which tarani of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng was written was circa 705 A.D., proving that Broussonetia Kazinoki Siebold was in production in Shilla in 8th Century. Also by confirming the fact that very thin -- mere 0.019mm thick -- Broussonetia Kazinoki Siebold was in production in Shilla in 8th Century, it is proved that Shilla has ability to produce Broussonetia Kazinoki Siebold for woodblock printing purpose. Fifth, concerning the Muju Characters(武周字: 則天武后 新制字) written in the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap, mixed use of the Muju Characters was noticeable in written in 755 A.D, from the Soˇoch'u˘ngsoˇkt'ap at the Hwoˇmsa written in the same era and the Tripitaka Koreana(高麗再雕大藏經). Therefore, it is pointed out Chinese opinion that the Saddharmapundanka(法華經) in (書道博物館) in Japan was printed in 690's A.D. because of appearance of the Muju Characters in the Saddharmapun-darika is erroneous. Sixth, by computerized graphic comparison and analysis (Adobe Photoshop 5.0) of the penmanship in the title at the end of a book(券尾題) of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap and the style of writing in the Sari-box(舍利函) from the Kuhwang-ri Soˇkt'ap(九黃里石塔) it is proved that the wirter of the title at the end of a book of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap and the metalic monument(銘文) of the Sari-box from the Kuhwang-ri Soˇkt'ap was same person. Therefore, it is proved that the woodblock printing period of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was begun in 706 A.D. by confirming the fact that woodblock printing of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng from the Soˇgat'ap was 2-3 months earlier than storing the Sari- box of the Kuhwang-ri Soˇkt'ap. Synthesizing above results it is confirmed that the publishing palce of the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng found in the Soˇgat'ap is Kyongju region and the publishing period begins in 706 A.D.
This study is on origin of woodblock printing by investigation on publication information of the Mugujoˇnggwangdaedaranigyoˇng(or the Mugujoˇngkyoˇng) found in the Soˇkgat'ap(釋迦塔) at the Pulguksa(佛國寺).
