The mechanical properties of thin films differ significantly from those of bulk materials due, largely, to the effects of interfaces, unique microstructure of thin films, and constraints from underlying substrates. The mechanical properties of thin films are generally difficult to measure using conventional methods, due to film thickness of micrometer level and the layer structure of substrate and attached thin films. In this study, thin films of Al, Al-1wt%Cu were deposited using a RF magnetron sputter to the thicknesses of about 0.5, 1 and 2cm, on the Si substrate of room temperature and 250℃. The stresses in the films were obtained using Stoney's formula with the curvatures measured using relative motion of laser beam and specimen (laser scanning method). Effects of deposition temperature and film thickness on the film stress were investigated using thermal cycling experiments. For Al-1wt%Cu thin films, the influence of precipitation hardening on the film stress was also investigated by performing thermal cycling experiments. The microstructures for Al-1wt%Cu thin films were observed using SEM before and after thermal cycling to find no significant change.
