Strength of open cell ceramics with a potential of lightweight structural material in wide applications was developed. Material properties of open cell ceramics, prepared by the polymeric sponge method, were also characterized and evaluated by this model to optimize the strength to weight ratio. Relative density equations were derived, based upon the geometric assumptions that three dimensional network structure of open cell ceramics is a periodic array of the tetrakaidecahedron unit cells consisting of triangular prismatic or cylindrical hollow struts with triangular prismatic hollow in the core of them. Compressive strength equation of open cell ceramics was also proposed to describe the brittle fracture of hollow struts by modifying the conventional models which based on fracture behavior of open cell structures subjected to the compressive stress. From the hollow strut model, relative density equations of open cell ceramics with cylindrical and triangular prismatic strut were described as p/p_(s) = 0.833(D/l)^(2)·[1-0.551(b/D)^(2)] and p/p_(s) = 0.613(H/l)^(2)·[1-0.75(b/H)^(2)], respectively. Compressive strength to strut strength ratio of open cell ceramics was considered as σ_(c)/σ_(fs)-0.103(D/l)^(3)·[1-0.369(b/D)^(4)] for both strut shapes due to their little difference. Both the relative density and the compressive strength were expressed in terms of the ratio of strut diameter to length and the ratio of the hollow size to the strut diameter. The predictions by hollow strut model developed in this study were in good accord with the quoted data form literatures on the relative density or the compressive strength of open cell vitreous carbon, alumina, alumina-mullite, high purity alumina and alumina-zircoma, as well as the experimental values for commercial alumina-zirconia measured in this work, while Gibson-Ashby and Zhang's model did not show such a good agreement. Open cell alumina, zirconia and silicon nitride were fabricated by the polymeric sponge method and the effect of fabrication variables and microstructures on their density and compressive strength was investigated. Density and compressive strength of open cell ceramics mainly depended upon the coating behaviors between ceramic slurry and polymeric sponge, which affects a shape, thickness and defect of the struts. Open cell ceramics of lower relative density below 0.1, prepared by first coating of ceramic slurry, had thin triangular prismatic struts that were often broken or longitudinally cracked. PVB coating on the struts of polymer sponge was effective to increase coated amount of alumina slurry on polymer sponge and enhanced the relative density and compressive strength of open cell alumina. With an application of second coating of slurry, shape of struts was transformed into thicker cylindrical one and defects in struts were healed, but the relative density increased over 0.2. Relative density and compressive strength behaviors of open cell ceramics prepared in this study were relatively well predicted by hollow strut model. Also compressive strength to strut strength ratio was well defined as a function of relative density. Density and compressive strength of open cell zirconia fabricated with second coating showed both the highest values of 1.386 g/㎤ and 98.11 Kg/㎠, respectively. Alumina had density of 0.795 g/㎤ and compressive strength of 39.55 Kg/㎠, while open cell silicon nitride had the lowest density of 0.603 g/㎤ and relatively high compressive strength as high as 59.84 Kg/㎠. From the analysis, it was evaluated that open cell silicon nitride is a potential material for the lightweight structural ceramics.
