For the purpose of encouraging the middle class elderly to actively take part in volunteer work, this study looks at the motives for volunteering of the middle class elderly and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of volunteer activity programs.
For this procedure, I focused on comparing senior citizens' volunteer activity programs that required certain abilities or professional job experiences, with those that were more simple in nature. Research was conducted through close interviews with a group of 40 seniors, including those who had already participated in professional volunteer activities, volunteers who had participated in nonprofessional volunteer activities, and those who had never participated in any volunteer activities.
As a result, it turned out that the retired middle class elderly were determined to spend their remaining years doing something meaningful as well as contributing to the community as leading seniors through volunteer activities. This desire was expressed within the family or the community in the form of self-dignity and commitment, as well as through self-achievements such as utilizing potential abilities and taking advantage of the opportunity to learn. Other senior citizens expressed a desire to volunteer as a way of taking part in particular fields of interest or as ways to pursue pleasure and fun.
By looking at the factors that stimulated participation in volunteer activities, it was discovered that professional volunteer activities had very positive effects on the seniors' attitudes towards their work. In other words, when professional job experience or ability was applied to the assigned activity, or when the assigned work was regarded as a very important part, the elderly were able to feel a sense of satisfaction and responsibility. As a result, volunteering was encouraged and activated. While participation was poor with such programs relegated to simply helping others, professional volunteer activity programs that satisfied desires of self-achievement and provided new and fun experiences brought a large increase in participation.
In regards to rewards for participating in such programs, the elderly were most satisfied with the rewards of acquiring a positive attitude towards themselves in relation to their family members or the community, and receiving educational opportunities rather than actual physical rewards. It was also shown that a strong bonds were formed within the volunteer groups, much like a fraternity, and drew more participation when a cooperative relation was formed between participants and the program manager so that the responsibility was shared.
The professional volunteer activities for senior citizens can be presented as a means of combining the desires of retired middle class elderly and volunteer activities. In light of this fact, we can improve the quality of life for senior citizens as well as prepare for an aging society by uniting the both young and old generations through these professional volunteer activity programs.
The following are suggestions drawn from this study:
First, more high quality volunteer activity programs must be developed for satisfying the social desires of the elderly.
Second, through organization of senior volunteers, a system must be established that allows them to work subjectively and actively; each being assigned a part and full control of their own job.
Third, a coordinator is required for collecting and reflecting the desires of the elderly volunteers. Thus, coordinators should control professional volunteer activity programs.
Fourth, in order to support and encourage volunteer activities for the elderly, public relations and reward systems should be included as well as legal support.
