Corrugated board is made of flat and flute papers attached together by adhesive, enough to endure the constant force from outside. This looks even simple, but has been one of the most creative items found by human-being. If there had been no corrugated board, we would have paid so much costs for preventing products from being damaged during distribution. Most of manufacturers stack many layers of corrugated boxes after products being packaged in them until the distribution takes place. Therefore, the compression strength which equals to a total weight of enduring the aggregated weight of the stacked boxes obviously becomes the most important physical property in a corrugated box. In general, a necessary compression strength to each product is different, and so, it is a way of saving unnecessary costs to use a corrugated box in compression strength, corresponding to the required force from the product. In USA, there are many methods to calculate a compression strength of corrugated boxes, and among them, there are 4 representative methods such as Kellicutt, Mckee, Wolf, Maltenfort formula. These formula were developed through long, actual experiences in industry and could be applied to the calculation of actual compression strengths most of times, but they can not be used for all the cases. In Korea, the Kellicutt formula has been applied to calculations of a compression strength. But, some characteristics of liners and medium papers are so different from those manufactured in USA, which causes to reduce effectiveness in calculation by the formula. So, it is natural for two calculated compression strengths to be different because the Kellicutt formula was completed through testings and delicate analysis with corrugated boxes manufactured in USA. However, there has been no trial on the study of making a simulation model of compression strengths applicable to corrugated boxes fabricated in Korea. This study focuses on analyzing, developing the theoretical frame to be able to optimize a compression strength of corrugated boxes in Korea, and then proving it by simulation, ending up developing a simulation model which can be used effectively in Korea. The steps of this study are as follows. The first step is to establish the standard in quality of papers in domestic corrugated boards by using testing methods - thickness, ring crush value - in ASTM with most of corrugated materials fabricated in Korea. The second step is to fabricate corrugated fiberboards and determine the relationship between sum of ring crush values from first step and edgewise compression strengths from second step. Flexural stiffness by flute shape was also measured and analysed in this step. The third step is to analyze factors which affect the compression strength of corrugated boxes by method of dimensional analysis and to design the simulation model for compression strengths based on the Buckingham's π-theory. In an effort of finding a constant(s) defined in the simulation model, three types of corrugated boards were manufactured, and tested for compression strength, such as single wall, double wall and double medium layer corrugated fiberboards. The final formula made in this study was compared and analyzed with the currently used formula, and was proved by application to the actual product packaging. Fiberboards made of domestic papers, the average difference between calculated values by currently used formula and actual values from testings was over 10% points while the new formula for the compression strength, called Lee's equation, showed less than 5% points in error. Especially, there was a higher variance between the actual values and the calculated values in compression strength for double wall corrugated board(DW). The calculated value was about 15% higher in average than the actual. The reason on the difference is that domestic double-wall corrugated boards tested in this study were made with flute A and B which leads 8mm in thickness while, the currently used formula were developed with corrugated boards formed with flute A and C which leads 9mm and more in thickness. The constants for double medium layer corrugated board(DM) needs to be corrected through more variety of testings, based on the formula from this study due to special characteristics in flute shape. In result, the compression strength formula suggested in this study was proved for the theoretical effectiveness, and was shown to be applicable to actual cases.
