The initial stage of design is the most important part in the whole design process, which is characterized by the establishment of design concept and design guides. However, the decision making and the problem solving processes in this stage are usually accomplished by designer's intuition and experience so that those processes are uncertain and personal in character.
The research works on design methods was started in early 1960s, as an effort to minimize this uncertainty of design process and to systemize the design in more logical and objective way. Research works which were aimed to explore the nature of design activities in real world applying the theories of cognitive science are in progress since late 1970s.
The purpose of this study was to analyze profoundly the process of interior design in a theoretical frame of cognitive science, and to examine how interior designers think in real design process.
To achieve this purpose, theoretical frame of the study was constructed based on the literature research of former studies about design methodology and cognitive process, four cases of design experiments were executed with the professional designers as subjects, and the cognitive processes of designers and the methods of problem solving and decision making were analysed using the experimental data.
The followings are the results of this study.
1) Design phases of all the cases had a basic structure of problem definition, conceptual design, design development, presentation, and finish, and they were separated into two tendencies ; design phase oriented process and sub-problem oriented process. The design phase oriented process was proceeded in the way that distribution of time and work was carefully considered from the very first, and the sub-problem oriented process was proceeded in the way that situational ideas were generated and applied in an instant.
2) The sketches from design process were not only the instrument for visual representation of designers' thought, but also the assistant for problem solving and idea generation. Also, there was a distinctive process of feedback between two-dimensional and three-dimensional sketches. In accordance with the characteristics of design phases, there were two tendencies of spending much time in presentation drawing and sketching situational ideas.
3) Among the cognitive activities in design process, drawing played the most important role, and critical decisions and idea generations were occurred as a result of interaction between activities like speaking, drawing, thinking and examining. Drawing and speaking appeared alternately overall the process, and it ascertains that the visual-graphic information and verbal-conceptual information influence the design process alternately and repeatedly.
4) Idea generation and decision for the given requirements took a major part of problem solving in a designer's cognitive process, and the interaction between several cognitive activities occurred vigorously in conceptual design phase and design development phase. There was some difference between the cases in which cognitive process proceeded consistently and systematically towards a goal of final solution, and the cases in which sub-problems were solved preferentially.
5) The detailed design element was the most important part in the contents of designer's thinking. The spatial element and the conceptual element were considered in second place. However, since there was a case that showed entirely different pattern under the influence of the designer's educational background and professional experience, it could be inferred that the personal difference affected contents of designer's thinking in a great deal.
In the characteristics of the interior design process, types of visual representation were not fixed as two-dimensional or three-dimensional forms, but they were interconnected in many flexible ways. Another distinct property of interior design process was the consideration of physical and visual elements rather than the conceptual and abstract elements.
This study proposed new theories and methods for interior design research, and the result of this study could be utilized to establish effective design process for the professional field, generating creative and unique solutions for design problems, and to develop curricula for training competent designers in educational aspects based on the understanding of knowledge and capability which is required in this profession.
