The future of the "content industries" is now totally intertwined with the future of the Internet and its successor networks, in a fundamental shift from physical to electronic dissemination. All varieties of intellectual property-including books, recorded music, academic journals, video, software and games, as well as types yet to be invented-will be swept along in this migration.
One of the key challenges in the move from physical to electronic distribution of content is the rapid evolution of a set of common technologies and procedures to identify, or name, pieces of digital content ("digital objects"). A widely implemented and well understood approach to naming digital objects is essential if we are to see the development of services that will enable content providers to grow and prosper in an era of increasingly sophisticated computer networking.
It became increasingly apparent during the 1990s that existing approaches to identification would prove inadequate to meet the need. The only content identifier commonly in use on the Internet - the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) used to find particular pages on the World Wide Web - was clearly deficient, not least because it was not used to identify content but rather location. The location is transient, whereas what was necessary was a means of identifying content itself, persistently and without ambiguity.
DOI, which is described as "persistent identifier of intellectual property entities", identifies the digital content itself rather than its location. In this study, I developed the Implementation model for Digital Content Indentification Service System using DOI. It is consisted of four sub-systems : DOI registration system, DOI resolution system, DOI retrieval system and DOI e-commerce system.
The description of the overall and sub systems are laid out while detailed functionality & implementation methods are proposed. In the design process, sufficient consideration was given to the 5 requirements in designing systems(expandability, reliability, flexibility, consistency, and user friendliness).
By proposing an implementation model for digital content identification service system using DOI, the results of this research can be utilized as implementation guidelines for the users of digital content, intellectual property rights holders, registration authority, etc.
