Sulfonated Polysulfone(SPSF) cation-exchange membranes is prepared by trimetyl chlorosilane used as mediate and chlorosulfuric acid used as sulfonating reagent. The SPSF membranes were analyzed ion exchange capacity, water content, fixed ion concentration depending on the suloonic acid group concentrations. Transport of sodium ions through the SPSF membrane coated on a rotating disk electrode was investigated in 0.5M NaCl as functions of sulfonic acid group concentratrations and membrane thickness. 1∼22㎛ membrane thickness was employed in this study and the sulfonic acid group concentration in the SPSF membrane was controlled in the range of 0.840 to 1.534 mol dm^-3. Water content increased as the sulfonic acid group concentrations but total resistance decreased with the membrane thickness. Oxidation and reduction potentials of the SPSF membrane were respectively measured as -100 mV, -180 mV vs. SCE. From the cyclic voltammograms, its electrode reaction was showed irreversible. Apparent diffusion coefficients of sodium ions were increased depending on the sulfonic acid group concentrations in the membrane but decreased with the membrane thicknesses. The reasons may be the SPSF membrane asymmetric and the layers became denser as its thickness increased.
