This study examines the patterns of repeat viewing on the network television programs in terms of program and viewer characteristics. It determines repeat viewing rates, the extent of audience viewing behavior and audience overlap among subsequent episodes of broadcast programs. The extent of audience overlap between subsequent episodes of regularly broadcast programs has been a subject of audience research for more than two decades in the U.S., Great Britain, Germany. Scholars of programming have long studied the mediating influence of structural factors on how audiences decide what to watch. Models of program choice focus on inheritance effects, repeat viewing, channel loyalty, and repeated exposure. The implications for research on exposure to television in the case of repeat viewing is widely thought to delimit if not ultimately determine media effects. The media constantly manipulate their programming to attract the audiences and the advertisers. By applying those early theoretical and empirical studies, this research investigates the question of how many viewers of a given episode will watch the consecutive episode and what kind of the patterns of television viewing would exist. From the results of previous research and the theoretical considerations, the following Research Questions are developed:
RQ_(1-1): How do repeat viewing rates vary with the average ratings level of the program?
RQ_(1-2): How do repeat viewing rates vary with the program type which could be classified as continuing and non-continuing story line?
RQ_(1-3): How do repeat viewing rates vary with the program scheduling characteristics which are frequency of broadcast and stripped programming?
RQ_(1-4): Which factor would be the most powerful and a highly significant determinant of repeat viewing levels among characteristics of the program?
RQ_(2): How do repeat viewing levels differ between male and female viewers in terms of the viewer characteristics.
The basic methodology of this study is similar to that used by Webster & Wang(1992). The research is based on a secondary analysis of AC Nielsen people meter data collected over a four consecutive week period ending June 25, 2000 as reported in the Program Cumulative Audiences. The Program Cumulative Audiences report lists all broadcast network programs that aired during the period, the average household rating per telecast, the total number of times the program aired, and the cumulative percent of TV households that saw one, two, three, up to as many as 20 broadcasts during the survey period. Goodhardt devised a method for translating these data on the distribution of households watching one or more broadcasts into the summary statistic commonly reported in the academic literature. By applying this method, the average percent of repeat viewing is able to be estimated for each program in the report. And three major network programs are the unit of analysis. A total of 278 episodes of 23 program genres are thus identified for the analysis. The dependent variable is the average percent of repeat viewing as determined by the Goodhardt translation. The independent variables in terms of program characteristics are the average household rating per broadcast, the scheduling which can be identified as the frequency of broadcast and stripped programming, and the program type which is associated with a continuing and non-continuing story line. Another independent variable is the viewer characteristic based on the gender type. Using a multiple regression analysis, the study found that a positive correlation between the average ratings level of the program and repeat viewing rates toward each program.
To the extent that any factor has been associated with variation in repeat viewing of series television, the most important correlate has been the ratings level of the program in question. The higher the average rating of a program, the higher the average level of repeat viewing. While this result seems to contradict notions of a 'small-but-loyal' audience, it is broadly consistent with the Law of Double Jeopardy, a phenomenon of mass behavior first described by Willam McPhee. Like other work with a structuralist perspective, empirical demonstrations of double jeopardy have tended to rely on aggregate measures of behavior rather than individual declarations of preference. Double jeopardy would further suggest that the average program rating of a television seires is positively correlated with its level of repeat viewing.
Results of the analysis promote that on average not even a third of the viewers of a given television program watch the consecutive episode. The average repeat viewing rate for all 278 episodes of 23 programs is 28.7 percent in Korea. Popular programs with higher ratings reflect higher repeat viewing rates. Television programs with steady ratings attract the same viewers each week. These viewer patterns appear to be in line with other findings about television viewing habits and consumer choice. Repeat viewing rates are higher among those with drama genres and female viewers. Because of the greater selection of programming in the circumstances of multi channel, repeat viewing levels keep decreasing constantly.
A continuing story line would draw curious viewers from one episode to the next and thus create higher levels of repeat viewing. However between different program types, there is little variation in the repeat levels.
In conclusion, the most powerful determinants of cumulative audience behavior, such as repeat viewing, are structural. Chief among those structural variables are program ratings.
