This study was performed to investigate the attitude and use pattern related to nutritional ergogenic aids and doping supplements use by the high school male athletes. Three hundred and eighty male athlete were chosen from various rural communities in Chonnam province, Seoul, Pusan and Kwangju city. The objectives of this study included determining What types of supplements were most commonly consumed by high school athletes; describing frequency during season and off-season; reporting differences in supplement use among regional and sport group; and assessing reasons for supplement use. participants completed a self-administered questionnaire detailing their supplementation patterns with respect to frequency of product use and reasons for use, etc. Comparisons were made between 2 regional areas(major and middle city) and 3 sport sub-groups(individual, fighting and group-sport). Nonparametric chi-square statistical tests and cross tabulations were used to compare the difference. The results were as follows; 1. Nutritional ergogenic aids 1) The overall mean prevalence of athletes' ergogenic aid supplements use was 23.8%(n=89), and the most common supplements were vitamin and mineral, and the least ones were carbohydrates and protein. 2) The most frequent reason for using supplements was not "to enhance performance in sports" but "to refresh fatigue". 2. Doping and drug abuse 1) The overall mean prevalence of athletes' doping and drug supplements use was 8.2%(n=31), and the most common supplements were sympathomimetic-amines and androgenic-anabolic steroid(muscle pill). 2) The most frequent reason for using supplements was "to reduce body weight" and "to reduce anxiety to competition". Doping is unfair, and must be banned from competition. This study is required to improve knowledge of doping as a public health issue. It is important that all sport-relators must be aware of the side-effects and health problems in misusers. By preparing effective, factual school and community organization on ergogenic drug use, drug-related education can help to dispel the misinformation that leads many high school students to begin using these agents. Additional research is needed to evaluate for female and various subjects.
