What makes individual workers "the workers"? This study examines the micro-mechanisms of class formation through which individual workers are changed into collective actors. I used qualitative methods to examine a hotel workers' strike in A hotel, taking a bottom-up approach that begins with the rank-and-file. This study, therefore, is methodologically distinct from class-formation studies that emphasize macro level processes or class-consciousness studies that are generally limited to survey research in Korea. My methodological approach is closely connected with the theoretical argument of this study. Marxist theory has premised a dual concept of class: class-in-itself which signifies the group that occupies a certain position in relations of production and class-f or-itself which signifies a self-conscious historical actor or revolutionary agent. Actually, Marxist class theory has oscillated between these two concepts of class, and the problem of class definition is the origin and kernal of much of Marxist theoretical debate. I argue that the dual concept of class creates a dichotomy in the definition of class, the field and the way research is conducted. And I emphasize that it is possible to study class-formation beyond this dichotomy. So this study criticizes the traditional formulation of class structure, class formation, and class struggle and analyzes the mechanism of class formation through the analysis of a strike, a form of class struggle. My research reveals the concrete micro-processes of class formation through which individual workers are changed into a collective actors. Through this theoretical and methodological approach, this thesis shows that the experience of workers themselves is the core factor in the class formation process. The experience has a particular meaning as it connects the objective-structural with the subjective-interpretational sphere, and combines the political economic with the cultural approach. In this study, the concept of experience is analytically divided into two levels: (i)the instant experience and the construed experience, and (ii)the experience-in-workplace and the experience-in-strike. These forms of experience are dialectically related: (i)That the workers experience instant experience is conditioned on the objective-structural sphere such as the character of industry or the force of productive relations. But this experience is also certainly interpreted by workers themselves, as all experience becomes construed experience. (ii)As the usual experience-in-workplace is divided into the instant experience and the construed experience like this, a specific cultural experience like the experience-in-strike such as the new common culture and language, appearance of particular symbols and representations, the formation of the community and so on affects the processes through which workers construe and interpret the experience-in-workplace. This process is that of class-consciousness formation indicating particular levels of class identity, class opposition, class totality. (This doesn't imply or premise the escalating stage of class-consciousness.) So, this study emphasizes several points: First, class identity is formed through the symbolic and cultural process like the experience-in-strikes, but this is based on the material foundation, the experience-in-workplace. Second, workers become aware of the class opposition as they construe their usual experience-in-workplace as the experience of exploitation. Third, class totality is perceived as a worker recognizes the totality of his or her individual experience and the whole experience of general workers. To conclude, this study highlights the experience-in-workplace as the micro-foundation of class formation and the essential place in which workers experience class relations in the concrete. And I emphasize it is possible and necessary to combine the bottom-up approach with the political economic approach, and furthermore, to clarify the dialectic relationship that has been regarded as dichotomous in sociology or Marxist theory: between class-in-itself and class-f or-itself , class structure and class struggle, necessity and agency, structure and behavior, objective and subjective.
