Accurate measurement of the shrinkage from mold dimensions of molded plastics is essential to design mold system in inject ion molding process. The post molding dimensional change of thermoplastic resins is important to tool designers for predicting the specific difference of molded part vs. actual mold cavity. Generally, articles injection molded are smaller in size than the cavity ; hence, the term "shrink age factor" is used to define the allowance a designer specifies. It is important to consider the factors that influence molded part dimension. With conditions considered "optimum" parts may be molded within specified tolerances. Using microcellular foaming process can reduce the volumetric shrinkage of thermoplastics in conventional process. Therefore, in this paper, a characterization of shrinkage of molded plastics in a microcellular foaming injection molding process was presented. The degree of crystallinity is one parameter that affects volumetric shrinkage of semi-crystalline polymers in injection molding process. In this work, mechanism which shrinkage appears in molded plastics was discussed. The goals of this work are to characterize the relation ship between crystallization and shrink age of semi-crystalline polymers and to derive effects of cells in microcellular processing from the volumetric shrinkage defined as a function of degree of crystallinity. The amounts of degree of crystallinity were measured by using various methods such as density method, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The reliability of dimensions in injection-molded parts was improved when microcellular foaming process had been used. The crystallization of microcellular foamed semi-crystalline polymer was affect ed by cell structure. On the basis of the relation ship between crystallization and shrink age of molded plastics, it was estimated with real experimental results for predicting a change of shrink age as a function of crystallinity in a microcellular foaming injection molding process.
