The heat exchangers commonly used in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipments are fin-tube heat exchangers, involving complex geometry and phase-change heat transfer such as evaporation and condensation. The design of such compact heat exchangers has been highly dependent on experimental data. Therefore, it is very important and urgent to develop experimental methods for establishing experimental data and design technology of high-efficiency exchangers. Experiments were carried out to investigate the heat transfer rate and pressure drop characteristics of slit fin and tube heat exchangers that have different number of circuits and arrangement using alternative refrigerants. A total of 7 sample were tested and compared. The experimental apparatus consisted mainly of a refrigerant loop and a air loop. Tests were conducted in a closed loop wind tunnel. In this apparatus, a gear pump is used instead of a compressor to circulate the refrigerant in order to measure the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of refrigerant without lubricating oil. The evaporation and condensation temperature of the refrigerant at the test section were maintained at 7℃ and 50℃, respectively. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 150 kg/㎡s to 250 kg/㎡s. The test method is changing refrigerant mass flux with constant air flow and air temperature, another method is varying air flow with constant refrigerant mass flux. This paper focuses on the data reduction method to obtain the air-side performance of fin and tube heat exchanger using refrigerant and recommends standard procedures for heat transfer and pressure drop in fin and tube heat exchanger. The data reduction methodology for air-side heat transfer coefficients in the literature is not based on a consistent approach. Results are presented as plots of f-factor and j-factor against Reynolds number based on the fin collar outside diameter and compare with previous studies. The predictive pressure drops are compared with experimental data which are obtained in fin and tube heat exchangers. In the case of heat exchangers having 3 circuits, performance of upper portion heat exchanger is superior to that of lower portion heat exchanger. Therefore the mal-distribution of the refrigerant flow is strongly related to the contribution of the gravitational pressure gradient. It was found that proper choice of circuits is needed according to the system characteristics and requirement. This paper presents the heat transfer rate and pressure drop characteristics of slit fin-tube heat exchanger using alternative refrigerants. The experiments were conducted in order to investigate the effects of the temperature glide and the length of two phase region for R407C, which is one of the potential candidates for pure refrigerant R22. Both the pressure drop and the heat transfer rate of fin and tube heat exchanger for R407C are considerably lower than those of R22. The lower pressure drop and heat transfer rate of fin and tube heat exchanger using R407C may be caused by delay of the development flow pattern and temperature drop, respectively. The heat exchanger modeling is based on a tube-by-tube approach, which is capable of analysis for the complex coil array. For fixed mass flow rate case and fixed outlet condition case for both evaporator and condenser respectively, experimental results are compared with simulation results for validation. This shows that simulation results are valid within 15% error range for heat transfer rate.
