It is known that DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) separated SS(suspended solid) from source water efficiently by attaching micro bubbles to the flocs. Thus, DAF removes low-density SS more efficiently than CGS9conventional gravity sedimentation0 does. Nevertheless, the dfficient design of DAF reactor still remains a daunting task since the DAF reaction involves 3 phase flows, which are water, air bubble and solid particles. To determine if the flow pattern of water affects DAF performance, the water flow in the flotation tank was analyzed using the FLUENT simulation. The FLUENT, a widely used CFD package, was used to visualize and analyze the flotation pattern in the tank. This approach was intended to minimize the time and cost of designing an efficient DAF plant. The flow analysis was conducted using baffles with varying height of 10cm, 20cm, 30cm and 40cm. The flow pattrns and mean x, y velocity in specific areas were examined for further analysis. To validate the FLUENT visualized flows, a dye test was preformed with models showing distinctive flow patterns. Surface x veolocity of the tank was experimentally measured using a buoy of which density being close to water. To determine whether the baffle height actually influenced DAF performance, the pilot plant test was done using a river water turbidity of 12NTU. The parameters set for the test were the flow rate of 9 to 10∮□/min and the operating pressure of 5 atm. The FLUENT simulation predicted that the velocities around the baffles and the surface increased proportional th the baffle height ranging from 10cm to 40cm. It was also revealed that relatively low baffles of 0 to 10cm induce the influent flowing out to the outlet, thus, preventing the water from staying enough time in the tank. As a consequence, bubbles have less chance to collide with suspended solids, shich results in por performance of DAF reactor. The pilot plant experiment also showed that the baffle height influence the removal rate. The turbidity removal rate was the best with the baffle height of 30cm, which provided the optimal residence time of floc-bubbles agglomerates (FBAs) in the bubble cloud. However, baffle taller than 30cm caused the exessive velocity increase in the flotation zone and the surface of he water. This unnecessary increase in velocity may shorten the residence time of the agglomerates of vreak up the flocs. Baffles shorter than 20 cm lowered DAF performance. This poor performance is caused by direct flow of infullent to the outlet, which was predicted by FLUENT analysis. In addition, the dye test and actual measurement of velocity in the matched FLUENT simulation well. Therefore, FLUENT proved to be an effective ool to predict analyze the flow pattern in the flotation tank and the flow pattern is an important factor affecting the DAF performance.
