The welding process, incorporating rapid heating and cooling, generates distortion and a residual stress in weldments. The welding distortion and the residual stress in welded structures can result in problems such as dimensional inaccuracies during assembly and raise concerns on safety during service. Therefore, an accurate prediction and a reduction of residual stress and deformation are critical to improving the quality of the weldment.
The weldment for carbon steel experiences metallurgical solid phase transformation due to severe thermal cycles. This study proposes a new analysis method to predict the welding residual stress and angular distortion by considering solid phase transformations during the welding.
The angular distortion is owing to nonuniform temperature distribution to the depth direction. It is effective method to reduce the nonuniform temperature distribution by appling the second heat source, gas flame, to back face of weldment. The analysis for weld deformation and straightening were performed on bead on plate using GTAW process. Four case, preceeding of arc and gas flame and simultaneous heating with arc and gas flame, heating of gas flame after entirely cooling of weldment was used to reduce the angular distortion. It was revealed that simultaneous heating with arc and gas flame show the least angular distortion through various analysis and experiment results.
The analysis results from the bead on plate was applied to fillet welds using GMAW. GMAW is characterized with weld bead which is formed from molten wire. The weld bead is a prime obstacle in the analysis of heat flow. In this study, the precise analysis of angular distortion was performed by considering weld bead in GMAW process. From the analysis and experiment results, simultaneous heating with arc and gas flame was very effective in reducing angular distortion in GMAW.
