This study was to investigate the function of the topic gesture in treaching English in elementary schools in Korea. In this study, the following questions were investigated: First, whether gesture can enhance listeners' comprehension of teacher utterances and second, what the role of gesture is when it is accompanied with mismatched speech. Sixty three elementary school students participated as subjects to perform this test. They were divided into three groups, that is, speech-only, speech-gesture match and speech-gesture mismatch, through pretesting to confirm their equality. After that, each group was arranged into its own test conditions which were controlled by whether it was presented with gesture or not, or whether with matched or mismatched ones. Stimuli for this test were videotaped with 20 matched and mismatched gestures accompanying speech created from the story of a Tom and Jerry cartoon. The result of the test was analyzed by comparing the test means, the means of wrongly selected choices and the means of choice number three by the group. The results of this study could be noted as follows: First, subjects responded positively to hand gesture that matched speech in listening comprehension, which means that gesture can have an influence on comprehending a speaker's utterance. Second, they understood less effectively the utterance when the gesture was mismatched with speech, which tells that gesture has an independent function to convey the verbal information in the communicative process. As the implications from this study show, elementary English teachers should broaden the understanding of the relationships between speech and gesture, establish systematic teaching strategies using gestures, and then adept the knowledge and strategies into teaching practice to improve the effectiveness of interaction with learners.
