Experiments were conducted to investigate the formation characteristics of SO3 by delivering the oxidation of SO2 in corona and barrier discharge systems. The reaction was conducted by using model gas(Air+SO2). Also, the reaction mechanism was analysed by calculating the conversion of SO2 from experimental results. In the plasma reactor, active radicals were produced as electrons collided with gas molecales of gas. These radicals reacted with poison gas such as SO2 to form SO3. Then, SO3 was hydrated by moisture in air. By employing the pulse-corona method, 30% of SO2 in the model gas could be removed. On the other hand, the conversion of SO2 reached up to 90% by employing the DC pulse barrier discharge method(gas flow rate 500ml/min, voltage 300V, frequency 200Hz). Furthermore, experiments were conducted to investigate the reaction mechanism of SO2 and O2 for the formation of SO3. For the purpose, the flow rates of the SO2 containing model gas were varied and reacted under constant SO2 concentration, voltage, and frequency. And, the reaction rates were simulated by the preposed reaction mechanism. Simulated results represented the experimental ones successfully in the barrier discharge reactor. These results definitely contribute not only to estimate the SO2 conversion but to decide the optimum condition.
