With the purpose of collecting basic data to make appropriate wrist splint, this study was designed to quantify the joint motions of wrist and finger to clarify the kinematic characteristics of chopstick-use, and to investigate the effects of wearing currently used wrist splint while using chopsticks. Eleven male and thirteen female volunteer subjects participated; all of them were healthy and right dominant. Three-dimensional analysis system, CMS70P, was used to record wrist and finger joint motions during the task of using chopsticks; with, and without splint, both picking up 3-different sizes. The results were as follows: First, wrist and finger joint motions(arc) while using chopsticks were: wrist extension 3.81˚∼5.31˚(Δ1.50˚), wrist pronation 3.10˚∼3.71˚(Δ0.61˚), thumb abduction 13.45˚∼14.84˚(Δ1.39˚), thumb MCP extension 3.42˚∼3.97˚(Δ0.54˚), 2nd finger MCP flexion 18.81˚∼20.14˚(Δ1.11˚), 3rd finger MCP flexion 31.07˚∼31.85˚(Δ0.78˚), 2nd finger PIP flexion 24.08˚∼28.18˚(Δ4.10˚), 3rd finger PIP flexion 24.93˚∼29.39˚(Δ4.46˚), 2nd finger DIP flexion 11.04˚∼14.19˚(Δ3.14˚), and 3rd DIP flexion 12.34˚∼13.45˚(Δ1.24˚). Second, with significant difference shown in wrist movement and finger joint arcs formed depending on the use of splint and the size of the object to pick when using chopstick, it can be incurred that the use of splint and the object size are definite factors to the motion effect in wrist and finger joint arcs in chopstick-use. Third, compared with the normal way of chopstick-use, kinematic changes were found while wearing splint: more wrist supination, thumb abduction and MCP flexion, less 2nd and 3rd MCP flexion, more 2nd and 3rd PIP flexion, and 3rd DIP flexion. 2nd and 3rd MCP joint had a close relationship with 2nd PIP and 3rd DIP joint. The kinematic changes were caused by the compensation of limited range of motion. With the result of this study, it is suggested to produce splint suitable for everyday lifestyle of oriental culture such as the chopstick-use by decreasing in thickness of web space to diminish the excess thumb abduction and compensation of MCP flexion, and new design development and new choice of material is suggested to open the palmar crease to permit more flexion in 2nd and 3rd MCP joints.
