The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the BLEVE probability of LP gas storage tanks which are relatively more dangerous, by the deductive calculating method using the results of Birk's pilot tank test and the required heat capacity of BLEVE. Especially, the same tank specifications as those used in the Puchon LP gas accident in 1998 were applied to this thesis, in order to approach the very similar situation. Besides, I tried to reduce error in calculation using domestic codes related to LP gas tank/PRV and the assumption of BLEVE conditions using A.M. Birk's pilot tank BLEVE test results(the time required until BLEVE, the temperature of shell plate at a point of BLEVE, the temperature of liquid containment and the pressure of vapour space at a point of BLEVE) from 1992 to 1996. The targeting objects for this study on the possible conditions of BLEVE are as follows: (1) Tank plate or its internal conditions that can cause BLEVE (strength depending on tank plate temperature, inner liquid temperature and relative filling level) (2) External leak and fire conditions that can cause BLEVE(required leak quantity, release rate, the diameter of holes and the size of pool fire) As a result of this study, the effect of tanks, internal liquid filling level on BLEVE was investigated, using by BLEVE Map drawn as a function between estimated tank's burst pressure and liquid energy at a point of BLEVE. The result that BLEVEs can occur in only above 43.68 percent of liquid filling level under 600℃ of tank pate temperature and 53℃ of inner liquid temperature, was obtained and will be useful for preventing the BLEVE of LP gas storage tanks in fire sites. In addition, this research showed conditions of external leak and fire causing BLEVE, based on 15ton capacity of LP gas tank which has the same specifications as those in Puchon LP gas filling station accident. First, the total input heat capacity of internal liquid at the conditions of BLEVE was calculated and then, liquid release rate, total release amounts, equivalent diameter of liquid release and equivalent diameter of two-phase release were obtained, based upon the calculated input heat capacity of internal liquid. The result of the calculation is that the minimum pool fire conditions of BLEVE are above 7.2mm equivalent diameter under a liquid release condition and above 17.6mm equivalent diameter under a two-phase release condition. In the end, the result of calculating the pool size corresponding the above conditions using EFFECTS version 2.1, concludes that a minimum of 3.3 meters of diameter and 10.4 meters of height should be needed for BLEVE outbreak.
