This study aims to investigate mother-of-pearl lacquer wares in the Koryo era and their manufacturing techniques with their origin. Most studies in mother-of-pearl lacquer wares in the Koryo era have been mainly made by Japanese scholars and their approaches were one-dimensional focusing on patterns not multilateral. In addition, their studies in interpretation have not given more weight so much to the context of their history as to the results of foreign influence. It can be seen that our culture of lacquer was self-generated through the examination into lacquer wares excavated in the prehistoric relics such as Namsung-ri in Asan, Daho-ri in Chanwon, Shindang-dong in Kwangju, and so on. In addition to this, it was affected by Nakrang where most lacquer wares in the Chinese Han era appeared and the culture of gorgeous lacquer wares was developed in the company of Chinese factors and traditional elements in the Triarchy era. Lacquer wares in the Triarchy era were mainly excavated in the ancient tombs, and manufacturing techniques used in the Koryo's mother-of-pearl lacquer wares were already seen. Conspicuous method(平脫技法; they lacquered on the metal decorations and materials at same time, after remove lacquer on the metal decorations) much more developed technique appeared in the unified Shilla era, and tortoise-shell and mother-of-pearl were used in other relics. The existing mother-of-pearl lacquer wares in the Koryo era are 20 pieces in total including 5 excavations, 14 complete ones, and a fragment. They are divided into the Buddhist goods and domestic goods for the aristocracy by their service, and again these can be classified into a brass bowl with a lid, a Box of Buddhist scriptures, Handle of Whisk carried by Monk, a Bottle of oil, and boxes. The extant examples are few and their types are various, but they are common in their manufacturing techniques possessing property of time between them. First, this study attempts to analyze their manufacturing techniques with special reference to how to handle mother-of-pearl, how to make patterns of pearl, how to decorate them, and how to use color painting under thinly-sliced translucent-shell and meta line. An abalone easily available in Korean waters is used as mother-of-pearl and finished with. The vessel is painted with lacquer and mother-of-pearl is attached to it and lacquered again and the paint of pearl part peels off. This is Adhesive techniques similar to Conspicuous method appeared in the unified Shilla era. Techniques for making patterns shown on mother-of-pearl lacquer wares is investigated on the basis of the forementioned manufacturing techniques and literary materials. As a result of this, 4 stage classification must be changed into 5 stage classification. Futhermore, this study attempts to interpret an international exchange at that time based upon the chronicle. Consideration into mother-of-pearl lacquer wares traded to Chinese Sung proves that most of them were domestic goods for life not goods related to Buddhism. This means that cultural exchange between Koryo and Sung was not so much public exchange by diplomatic relationship between two countries as private exchange on the basis of civil trade, and that domestic goods for life by private production were more than the Buddhist goods made by national workshops. This seems clearer compared to the number of missionary exchange between two countries and the visiting number of Sung's merchants. In addition, this study attempts to investigate the relations with Chinese Yuan. In the fourteenth century, the Koryo mother-of-pearl lacquer wares were made in large quantities and some of them were transmitted to China, and it will be estimated that Yuan's artisans had eyes on them. As seen in some pieces of box of Buddhist scriptures handed from Yuan to Japan, it will not be difficult that the better mother-of-pearl lacquer wares could be made in Yuan's lacquer workshops in their quantity and system. It can be assumed that Koryo and Yuan exerted an influence upon each other in the manufacturing techniques of mother-of-pearl lacquer wares. This statement is authenticated in the fact that several literary materials write that a great many the Buddhist scriptures were required from Yuan in the ages of King Chungryul and King Chungsun, in the fourteenth century and that many Monks of Buddist related to the manufacture of scriptures were taken to Yuan. As investigated up to now, the data of the Koryo mother-of-pearl lacquer wares are scanty and studies in them are shortsighted in spite of their excellency Therefore, a continuous study on them with a new approach and a broad insight must be made from now on.
