Studies of the brand equity, if any, should focus mainly on clearly defining its concept, clarifying its elements and studying its formation process. Nevertheless, there have been few studies about how the brand equity is formed within the psychological process of customers. This indicates that how the brand equity is formed in customers' mind and how it is converted into customers' behaviors have not been clearly clarified so far. Thus the purpose of this study is to determine how the brand equity is formed in the psychological process of customers by reviewing previous studies of relations between marketing factors influencing the formation and elements for the formation. For the purpose, the study performed literature and empirical research together, In the former, the formation process of the brand equity modeled based on reviews of the current suggested definitions and elements of the equity while in the latter, the formation process was empirically tested using LISREL. Specifically consumers purchasing sports shoe brands were classified into three, or the whole, high involvement and low involvement groups according to their extent of involvement in the brands, ultimately seeking toward clarifying the formation process of the brand equity. Data was collected from college students purchasing sports shoes residing in Busan. The reason why sports shoes were selected is it was found in a preliminary survey that they depend mainly on their brands in being purchased. College students were sampled as the only subject of the study because they show a relatively high frequency in buying such shoes than any other groups. Eight sports shoe brands were chosen in the study because they are generally popular and recognized among similar brands from local and foreign countries. The main focus of the study is to determine how the brand equity is formed in the mind of customers. In this relation, the study explored theoretical backgrounds through the review of related previous studies which in turn were analyzed empirically. Results of the study and their suggestions can be summarized as follows. First, among precedent factors required for the formation of the brand equity, advertisement was found having positive effects on both brand awareness and brand image irrespective of the two groups, or high and low involvement groups. Sales promotion did not have any effects on both brand awareness and brand image in the low involvement group while positively affecting brand awareness in the high involvement group. Distribution intensity was found having effects on both brand awareness and brand image in all of the two groups. The finding that sales promotion could raise brand awareness only in the high involvement group suggests that most of the existing sales promotion are dependent mainly on means proving financial incentives such as discount and gift presentation. Second, relations between brand awareness and brand image showed that the former has effects on the latter in both high and low involvement groups. This suggests that brand awareness plays a role in associating brand image. Third, relations among brand awareness, brand image and brand preference showed that both of the former twos influence the other in the high involvement group and that brand awareness cannot influence brand preference in the low involvement group. This suggests that in the high involvement group, consumers could be induced to purchase specific brands by increasing brand preference only through raising brand awareness. Fourth, relations between brand preference and brand loyalty showed that the former has effects on the former in both high and low involvement groups. This suggests that there is little possibility for consumers preferring specific brands to turn to other brands which have advantages such as price discount and gift presentation. Considering a few limitations of the study, further studies in the future should be performed in the following directions. This study was restricted to sports shoes and college students as the sampled subject in collecting data, making impossible avoiding little representation. The subject was sampled only within the region of Busan and data collection was made depending on the method of convenience sampling whose inner validity is low. Thus empirical analysis results of the study are difficult to be generalized for all sport products and other consumer groups. Finally, future studies on the formation process of the brand equity should clarify precedent factors influencing the formation in various and precise ways, determine how such influencing factors have effects on the formation process and examine how those factors influence the process according to individual characteristics of each consumer, ensuring deeply studying consumers' behaviors as loyal to brand.
