The reminding images when we think of factories and work places - machinery, conveyer belt, mass product, foremen, blue-collars, white-collars, etc.- have been formed along with the development of capitalism. As the Industrial Revolution came to associate a rapid progress of mechanical technology with the accumulation of the capital, the industry structure changed from the handcraft manufacture to large factory system relying on machinery in the late nineteenth century onward. In that process, the whole concept of labour was transformed from the abstract and moral to positive and rational one. While Europeans took on the studies on the physiological, pathological, medical and sociological aspects of the labour from the late nineteenth century, a movement toward the rationalization of labour process and organization of work place, namely the Scientific Management or Taylorism, were accelerated in America. These two movements were combined together through the course of the World War I, which explains the actual birth of 'Modern Industry' at the beginning of twentieth century in West. This essay was designed to explore the ways in which the photography occupied the 'site specificity' during the course of industrial modernization. In the formation of industrial system which was called as Scientific Management of America, photography operated as the dynamic apparatus of representation rather than simple instruments for the records and observations. Photography not only confirmed the discourses of objectivity and certainty existing in the Scientific management, but also contributed to modify the brutal disciplines of Taylorism. In this process, photography established its own visual hegemony as being an objective representation. That is to say, an intertextual relationship exists between the Scientific Management and photography. It is at this point that the Motion Study of the Gilbreths was initiated. The non-scientific and non-humane aspects of Taylorism was modified by the influence of Frank Gilbreth who dwelt on the development of the motion study and Lillian Gilbreth whose choice was to introduce psychology into the field. The former focused on the objectivity/rationality/certainty in scientific management while the latter turned to more humane qualities such as the cooperation/happiness/self-fulfillment. All the methods they specialized in were able to perform well by means of photographic image/technology. Taylor, the very first advocator of the Scientific Management, introduced a 'time-study' aimed to 'measure' the labour. The notion of his time-study was to measure the time spent on the specific labour of a worker by using a stop-watch, which in result leaded to finding the 'one best way'. On the other hand, the Gilbreths speculated upon visualizing the motion in an attempt to overcome the ineffectiveness of Taylor's stop-watch in visualization. The underlying assumption was that being able to visualize the motion would also make it calculable in a quantitative way. To achieve this, they made an inventive use of photographic image/technology. The naming of 'Motion Study' therefore applied to the recording and visualization of the standard motion. The Gilbreths conceived that above all the motions had to be recorded in a definite, distinct and simple way. Also another suggestion was made that the instrument of the recording should be able to embody a 'mechanical objectivity'. These were the reason why they adopted photography and cinematography. Although they started from the photography as a simple means of documents, the need to detect even the tiniest micro-motion induced the Gilbreths to devise more elaborate and specialized methods in photography. They displayed cross-sectioned screens onto the every background in which the workers were filmed. Every frame was then given an insertion of a specially invented micrometer while being filmed, which enabled the camera to record every movement of the workers. In due course, the cross-sectioned screens, micrometer and the gaze of the camera quantified, sectionized and anatomized the bodies of the workers within the axes of time and place. Besides, they invented some special methods, namely 'Chronocyclegraph' and 'Wire Model' for more advanced micro motion study. By attaching a blinking small lamp onto a particular part of the body and photographing this in a long-exposure, the flow of each motion could be visualized in the traces of the light. They even molded the traces of the light into wire in order to perpetuate the motions. Now, the motions were reduced into the white lines and black backgrounds by the photography. A worker's body, a space in the crossroad where the ideology of capital, politics of labour, conditions of work places, disciplines of time, space and machinery have all been intersected, were now displaced into the mere traces of light viewed through chronocyclegraph. Significantly, as a result, the photography disengaged the labour from its traditional position within the social, political, cultural, economical context and reconstructed the whole notion of the labour as a language of the geometry and the abstract existing in the traces of the light. However, more important is that the photographic image didn't end as an only mathematical language. The one best motion was defined in comparison with the patterns of the light and geometric figure in photography. The targeted point of this standard motion way was the bodies of the workers. It is notable that none of this procedure was compulsive or oppressive. As the workers themselves accepted the 'principle of efficiency' which made it possible to achieve more tasks in limited time, they internalized 'the one best way' of the most crucial discipline of Taylorism. This procedure of internalization became possible due to the Gilbreths' efficient instruction and enlightening. They always co-screened two very different kinds of cinematography or photographs, one visualizing better workers in motion and the other of more general workers doing the same job. When they provided the workers with wire model of standard motion, they always made sure to give a model of better workers with it. By doing this, the Gilbreths made the workers compare and analyze a standard motion with a non-standard one. Moreover, they would invent an instrument of self-photograph for those workers who were reluctant to be observed. Here, not being a mere tool of scientific observation and record any more, photography operated as a technology of effective discipline and enlightening that habituated the workers to the gaze of the power. Consequently, the workers were de-skilled and the hierarchy between intellectual labour and physical labour were distinctly revealed. Photography changed the labour process into simple imitation and repetition in the same way that it transposed the workers' position as objects and others within the Taylor system. In photography, they only existed as faceless, nameless subjects. However, photographic methods for motion study had its own errors and limits. This was mainly because the subjects in front of camera could also present themselves in an honorific manner. The workers behaved like an actor/actress or even a star in the 'betterment room' for motion study. They intentionally tried to pose rather than to be themselves and enjoyed putting on a clean face in neat clothes there. From this moment, it was recognised that photography was not just an elaborate technology that removed the skills from the workers and inscribed one standardized labour in workers' bodies. For the workers, photography was an apparatus to be proud with the thought of "I was chosen for this motion study", an opportunity to escape from the monotonous mood of work place even for a while, and further, a space for pleasure and compensation in which they were allowed to identify themselves as stars. The Gilbreths made the most of this effect of photography quite aggressively. Although those images were far from the scientific observations and records, they included them in the parts of motion study. Through the process that the workers transformed and turned the signification of photography to meet their own interests and demands, and that the Gilbreths in return brought those images into the motion study again, photographic image/technology modified the non-scientific aspects of Taylorism and put more lively moods into the workplace. As a result, the brutal disciplines of Taylorism was softened, while the possibility for the capitalist to predict and control the labour became more strengthened. The above mentioned proves that the role of photography in Scientific Management contributes to moderate and at the same time elaborate the solid, stiff principles of Taylorism by providing it with the scientific rhetoric and humanistic element. Therefore, photography did operate as the scientific observation and record, a technology for discipline and enlightening, and an apparatus for pleasure and compensation. Photography could traverse all these three layers due to the fact that its discourses of objectivity, transparency, veracity, neutrality intersected pertinently with the concept of 'scientific' which Taylorism was devised to pursuit. Here, it can be elucidated that the relationship between Taylorism and photography has been constructed upon the basis of intertextuality.
