Despite its popularity among the general reader, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has been overlooked in the study of nineteenth century English literature until the early twentieth century. Even the literary criticism in the twentieth century has had the tendency to discuss the novel through Elizabeth's morality and Jane Austen's conservatism. Recently, however, the novel began to be recognized as feminine literature. In this thesis, I examine female characters' thoughts and actions of Pride and Prejudice based on socialist feminism. The time of the novel's publication was experiencing the change of the social structure and hierarchy owing to the capital flow, that is, from the early eighteenth century to the late nineteenth century. Females came to be recognized as independent beings. Socialist feminists emphasize that the social structure represses the female life. Especially, they examine the female suppression as originated from feminity, family, and marriage of the social structure, and thereby the male, who has capital and occupies the centre of the social structure, maintains his power. The female characters of this novel react variously to the dominant ideology which was changing at that time. This thesis consists of four chapters. After briefly discussing the general overview on the novel in the first chapter, I argue how female characters act in the social structure at that time in the second and the third chapter. The first part of the second chapter deals with Elizabeth. Recently many critics regard Elizabeth as a feminist for her independent character. However, they overlook the reality and the social structure by which the female is repressed. In this regard, although I acknowledge the validity of earlier critics' argument that Elizabeth takes morality seriously, I attempt to show how her morality proves inferior when she faces highly hierarchic men, especially Darcy. I recognize, hence, Elizabeth understands the dominant ideology of the time very well. In the latter part of the second chapter, Jane is described as a peaceful, warm, and lovely woman. However, she doesn't have pride and a critical view on the reality by the attitude to an unconditional kindness and passivity. She is internalized easily in the domination ideology. The third chapter examines about Charlotte and Lydia. Many earlier criticisms regarded Charlotte's choice of a husband according to his economic power not by his personality and Lydia has no discretion. First of all, by examining Charlotte's actions and thoughts, I comprehend she faces facts she is and is critical on a view of marriage and the reality. She feels that happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance, so marriage is just like a system to her. Lydia resists the dominant ideology, too. She has an excessive liberty and puts herself in the middle of the world. Lydia's actions and thoughts and love's flight with Wickham is exceptional at that time. This means that she is beyond the dominant ideology. In this thesis, I have attempted to examine the feminist structure of this novel by analyzing the female characters. It can be suggested that Jane Austen creates the female characters who get out of difficulties forced by the ideology of marriage, feminity, and family. I conclude this novel is a progressive work which describes females' diverse perspectives on the socially structured marriage, family, and the feminity related to the female life in the patriarchic society.
