TThis thesis is that I analysed films in cinematic representation and interpretation of various gender identities based on queer theory comparatively with the concepts of Jungian Analytical Psychology. The reason why Jungian psychology is the object of comparison with the queer theory is that the concept of androgyny of Jungian psychology is described on rhetoric with sexual connotations and also has a similar defiant discourse against the heterosexual difference in queer theory, then is determined to two similarities. Therefore, this study is willing to find a similarity of Jungian psychology with queer theory adapted to psychoanalysis, or to find a difference of the two. In this approach, I will amplify psychological recognition to the queer representations in film with comparison of two theories. This study is consisted of theoretical background, descriptions of concept, and the case study of film analysis. At first in chapter 2 it is described to the main concept of shadow, anima, animus, the elements of the unconscious. Also, it is described to the projecton, a psychological mechanism to act against same or contrasexual object, so called a fuction of merging the conscious with the unconscious. On the contrary Freudian concept of oppression, it is different from that Jungian concept of oppression is acted by the funtion of mind as compensation. This chapter will be described by that how the compensation process is being able to do that. This kind of conjunction concept in Jungian psychology is described by the rhetoric, the androgyny. Jungian concept of androgyny is used by mythological, biological concept into psychological signification which is defined in terms of figurative psychic state. And, next, in relation to Jungian psychology, androgyny psychology, which is a dissident school of psychology that it probes to the nature of androgyny in psychological fields, is located in. Sandra Bem, a psychologist, found that gender differentiation is not fixed by binary, but variant, which is divided into tripartite structure: male, female, and androgynous identity. Androgyny psychology, which is described to the process obtaining gender fixity and identity in androgynous position, is the methodology to eschew fixed gender determination. Androgyny psychology is seeking the signification and point of view in androgynous representation of the traditionally defined human value within religion and cultural arts manifestations, not only in psychological criterion. From figurative androgynous representation of Plato's [Symposium] to literary interpretations of allegorical rendering in Victorian novels such as Virginia Woolf, it is said that Carolyn Heilbrun, who found defiant discourse against fixed genderiz ed society, and probed the value of androgyny, and June Singer, who sought to the meaning of androgyny in relation to human creation myth, and androgynous gods throughout Eastern, Western religion and philosophy, is evident. Finally I introduced the queer theory, dependent to psychoanalytical methods. There is history of the queer theory, and relation to feminism theory, and its difference, and the current issue of queer politics in various queer situations meeting with gender determination, defiant to it. It is also explained that there are about meaning in queer politics, social signification, and questions of cross-dressing, transsexualism, and difference between heterosexuality and gay sexuality. In third chapter I tried to unite Jungian psychological adaptations in terms of analysis of two ideal texts to fit exactly Jungian theory. Firstly, analysing Vertigo reflecting a heterosexual system, I demonstrated that how Jungian concept functions within a heterosexual system. It is said that man(woman) in compulsory heterosexual order is being intersected by way of two inner energy flows in terms of the side of compensation, and through psychic process of sexual blending, role reversal, identity perplexity we see the facet of trying to unite the conscious and the unconscious. In Vertigo there is a closure of failure to unite them, therefore it is found to a clue of mystery and secret in Jungian psychology. Also, Vertigo is a work which is circumvented in male, female identi ication and subject interpretation in various views through analysing psychoanalytically within feminist film theory. The bi-textual interpretation of queer side is induced to the new approach inversing fixed gender role. Second text Priscilla, the Queen of the Desert shows cross-dressing, transsexual narrative which is thought to be important by queer theory in terms of Jungian reinterpretation. By way of Jung we find that the projection doesn't occur towards outward partner, but inwardly projects within inner self as if the characters of Priscilla is a mythical androgyny, an archetype. Queer controversy is a political question of what they act against heterosexual social order and it is shown that its interpretations are contrary. Two different positions are here: Judith Butler, a proponent who thought drag as a defiant role performance to reverse fixed gender and Esther Newton, a critical one who proposed that drag immitates heterosexual order, only reiterates it. Through arguing the different interpretation on cross-dressing and transsexual role in queer politics, the next argument is being shown in analysing the controvertial film She Must Be Seeing Things which is in the center of gay theme debate. The film's central issue in queer perspective is that butch/femme aesthetics in lesbian sexuality is whether it is deviant of gender fixity or it is on the immitational game. De Lauretis in lesbian feministic view argues that it evades to gender fixity by way of fantasy formation, on the contrary Karin Quimby partly accepts de Lauretis' argument and proposes a view of ethnic, cultural difference that de Lauretis lacks in her theory which is indulged into psychoanalytical fantasy theory. Jung sees gay sexuality as an archetypal projection, and adapting Jung to this filmic case which has partner in butch/femme couple it is commented that the outward projection may occur in butch/femme relation and its relation doesn't immitate heterosexual order, rather it acts on the conce pt of 'conjuntio oppositorum'. Finally I analysed Orlando which is fit to the synthesis of above discussions in Jungian interpretation. The reason why I take the film is that Orlando is a sample piece which demonstrates the concept of mythical androgyny and figuratively mentioned gender formation and reversal meaning. Next I approached Antonia' Line which is demonstrated to conjunction concept in reality terms, is contrast with Orlando. Also these works are analysed with the fact that Jungian conjunction theory is demonstrated as Eastern, Western alchemical theory and Western performance theory.
