The light is an essential element which can change an architecture and the architecture is always existent with light. The architecture live with the light and if the light is gone, the architecture will be disappeared. Also, if the architecture which takes form the world, the light will be vanished. This study attempted to present the problem of architectural space and light, identify the concept, kind and meaning of light to lay a foundation for theoretical inquiry, make inquiries into light in architectural space in historical, characteristic, structural and material terms on this basis and present the plan for utilization of light in architectural space through the case study. Based on the study results, the following conclusion could be drawn: First, light plays a role of the medium that enables the eyesight needed by humans to understand their surrounding environment to serve its function, and humans come to perceive brightness, darkness and colors by sensing the visible light, some of every radiant energy of the universe. Second, light includes natural light and artificial light. Seeing that natural light is always changed by the natural environment such as climate, geographical conditions, natural features and the like and changes the quality of architectural space, attempts have continued to be made at how to apply light to the architectural space. On the other hand, artificial light can be used to adjust the intensity of illumination in accordance with nighttime and changes in the natural environment which are the limitations of natural light but requires physiological adjustment because it is inconsistent with the natural environment, Third, light has physical meaning. Light has such physical meanings as shadow as the cognitive element, permeability and filterability as the element of use. Fourth, light, the source of visual perception in human experiences from a historical perspective, is interpreted as the absolute value constituting architecture. The history of architecture can be said to be the history of light. Human beings have struggled with how to construct the optimal environment by controlling light since they built their shelter for residence. They have expressed it in diverse architectural forms, and such attempts are made through structures and materials. Fifth, light is the only changing element constituting architecture in characteristic terms, and architecture always exists while its inside and outside receive light. Light includes the light shining the object, the light filling the space and a combination of both. The light shining the object can find expression in the light of Greek architecture and appear as the light reinforcing the material properties of the architectural form through the correspondence of both the matter of light and architecture and the shadow created by it. The light filling the space can be found in the light of Roman architecture and Gothic architecture. Roman architecture fills the space with light through openings in structural terms, whereas Gothic architecture fills the space with light changed through stained glass, the film, in material terms. And in contemporary architecture the combination of the light shining the object and the light filling the space is being attempted through structures and materials in a diverse way. Sixth, light in architectural space emphasizes or relaxes the structure by exposing the surface of the structure and laying the outline of the main structural member. In architectural space, light chooses the structure to serve its proper purpose, the structure restricts and regulates light and light again exposes the structure. Both structure and light have the mutually close relationship in architectural space. Seventh, each material in architectural space confers a different property on the space through reflection and absorption appropriate to ceilings, walls and floors by using the physical properties of light.
