Dancesports socialization is a lifelong process which individuals develop and shape their social identities, create a sense of self, and learn how t o participate in dancesports roles and relationships. The purpose of the present study was t o quantitatively determine the influences of factors related t o dancesports participation, stress, social support and mental health under the assumption that complex and various social psychological factors operate in dancesports socialization process. Research hypotheses and causal model were designed based on the previous studies and theories. Personal attributes, significant others' interest and encouragement, and self-determination were established as background variables, dancesports participation as a independent variable, stress and social support as intervening variables, and mental health as a dependent variable. The sample was collected from 588 of dancesports participants and 511 of dancesports non-participants living in Seoul city and Kyunggi province using a purposive sampling method from May to July, 2001. Data were collected through the questionnaire based on the previous studies using Self-determination (Pelletier, Tuson, & Haddad, 1997), Stress (Kang, Shin-Wook), Social Support (Cohen & Hoberman, 1983), and mental health (Derogatis, Derogatis, & Rock, 1976) was measured by the scale designed from 10 specialists in dancesports, statistics, and sports sociology. The questionnaire was used after testing validity and reliability through pilot study. On the basis of the results analysed, the conclusions were drawn as follows; 1. Job had negative effect on participation frequency of dancesports, and gender and job also had negative effect on participation duration of dancesports, but there are not effective variables on participation intensity of dance sports. Brothers' interest and encouragement had positive effect on participation frequency of dancesports, and brothers' interest and encouragement also had negative effect on participation intensity of dancesports, but there are not effective variables on participation duration of dance sports. Identification motivation had negative effect on participation duration of dancesports, and extrinsic motivation had positive effect on participation intensity of dancesports, but there are not effective variables on participation frequency of dance sports. 2. Gender and age have significant effects on stress, and the experience of Participation in dancesports were found t o have significant effects on stress, but participation intensity of dancesports had negative effect on stress. 3. Gender, job, education, and income have significant effects on social support, and the experience of participation in dancesports were found to have significant effects on social support, but participation degree (frequency, duration, intensity) of dancesports was not found to have significant effects on social support. 4. Gender, age, job, and income have significant effects on mental health, and the experience of participation in dancesports were found t o have significant effects on mental health, and participation degree (frequency, duration, intensity) of dancesports also were found t o have significant effects on mental health. 5. Gender, age, education and income had significant effects on mental health. Father, brother, friend, dance teacher, and mass-media's interest and encouragement had significant effects on mental health. Intrinsic, secret, and extrinsic of motivation had significant effects on mental health. 6. Background variables, participation degree of dancesports, stress, social support, and mental health had significant effects on mental health through direct and indirect paths. In conclusion, the background variables such as gender, job, father and brother's interest and encouragement, and identification and extrinsic motivation influences on participation degree of dancesports. And it contributes to increasing mental health by decreasing stress.
