The purpose of this study is to investigate the Russian music in the 20th century, the characteristics in the musical style of Prokofiev(1891-1953) in general, and in particular, and promote unders-tanding about it's performance.
Prokofiev is a composer of the Post-Romanticism period but he acccpted the characteristics of the 18th century and the classical music influenced by NEO-Classicism. And he pursued modern Factors in harmony, melody, and strong expressions of feelings. In addition, he tried to adjust his music to the controled socialistic realism under the confused political and social changes in the 20th century.
Prokofiev founded his musical language from the side of five lines which had been identified by himself. This five lines of his compositions are classical factors, innovation, motor or toccata, lyricism and grotesqueness. Among the 9 sonata he left, especially Sonata No. 6 expresses these five lines harmoniously which are consisted of classical lines and modern lines. And Sonata No. 6 is one of the his later works which is the most grand sc-ale Sonata requiring very intensive technique.
This work has four movements which has traditional formation in structure. The 1st movement is Sonata forms, and the 2nd and 3rd movements are ternary forms, and the 4th movement is Rondo form. And the all movement are united by using of a cyclic form; the theme of first movement reappears in the last movement.
His harmony is very complicated, creative and evokes a modern sense such as poly-tonality, multi-tonality, sudden modulation and disharmonized chords, but he isn't breaking the framework of the tonality. His rhythms and melodies are very simple and clear, but the melodies have also abundant lyricism.
In conclusion, Prokofiev made a important contribution to the 20th century's music by harmonizing the classical tradition with the modern innovation appropriately. Moreover he created his own characteristic features and made his own unique position in the 20t century.
