This study investigates characteristics of the stratospheric major sudden warmings(hereafter MSWs) using NCEP reanalysis data for 42 years(1958-1999). The MSW is defined when the latitudinal gradient of zonal mean temperature between 85oN and 60oN at 10 hPa is positive more than 5 days and the zonal-mean zonal wind at 65oN, 10 hPa is negative during positive temperature gradient. It was found that the MSWs defined by zonal-mean temperature and zonal wind using NCEP data are reasonably acceptable compared with previous studies using radiosonde data except for few cases. This difference is due to the different definitions and periods of data used for each MSW study. There is a variability of MSW frequency during 42 years, which tends to increase from 1970s to 1980s, and decrease from 1980s to 1990s. In February, most of the MSWs occur once every other winter, but this pattern changes in 1990s to be non-periodically. To find out MSWs using monthly-mean data more easily, reliable criterions are suggested. In case of temperature and temperature gradient, values higher than 0.5 times of their standard deviations are most reliable for the temperature in December and February and temperature gradient in December and January, and those higher than square root for temperature in January and temperature gradient in February. Comparing in decades, the error is much less in December than in January and February. Contrary, in case of the zonal-mean zonal wind, values lower than 0.5 times of their standard deviation in February are most reliable while values lower than their standard deviation are most reliable in December and January. These statistic criterion can be used to detect MSWs using monthly-mean data when there is long-period data. MSWs are categorized to Type I and Type II based on the amplitude of planetary waves with zonal wavenumber 1(wave-1) and 2(wave-2) before and after MSWs. Among the total 23 MSWs, 14 of them are grouped into Type I and remained 9 are grouped into Type II. The 16 cases occurred in the QBO easterly phase, and 7 cases of them in the QBO westerly phase. The warmings in the QBO easterly phase occurred in between December and January, and most of them correspond to Type I. On the other hand, the warmings in the westerly phase occurred in the late February, and mostly they correspond to Type II. In the case studies, warmings are mainly determined by wave-1, wave-2 and combined structures, and remained part that cannot be explained by those of lower wavenumber waves are explained by the effect of waves with much larger zonal wavenumbers. The Type I is characterized by strong wave-1 propagated from the troposphere before warming and relatively weak wave-2. The Type II is characterized by strong wave-1 exclusively in the stratosphere prior to warming and strong wave-2 in the both troposphere and stratosphere before and after warming. The behavior and structure between these two types are different, except for a common feature of which a single cyclonic vortex distorted and centered slightly off the pole becomes stronger before MSW is taking place. Effects of the planetary waves on MSW are calculated by E-P(Eliassen-Palm) flux vectors and their divergence. Prior to the onset of warming, the E-P flux vectors are diverted from equatorward propagation to the poleward propagation. In case of Type I, warming is mainly explained by the E-P flux forcing by the wave-1. Contrary, In Type II, wave-1 forcing occurs about Lag=-35∼-40 days before onset of warming(Lag=0) and was followed by intensification of wave-2 prior to Lag=0. Wave-2 forcing becomes larger and reaches a peak about Lag=± 5 days, respectively. Most of poleward focusing waves are generally accompanied by large negative values of E-P flux divergence, which act as the eddy forcing and result in accelerating the easterly wind in upper levels. The linkage between the troposphere and the stratosphere during major warming events is investigated by EOF(Empirical Orthogonal Function) of the geopotential height deviations from 41-yr mean at 500 hPa. Correlations between the planetary waves with zonal wavenumbers 1 and 2 at 10 hPa and the first two EOF modes at 500 hPa are shown to be complicated with various lags that cannot be fully explained in this study. Detailed analysis of MSWs and relationship with tropospheric entire circulation is remained to be done in the future.
