The prediction methods for tunnelling-induced building damage in urban area generally rely on 2-dimensional ground movements. The existing 2D assessment methods have a shortcoming which estimate only the walls of buildings at transverse section along the tunnel line after 100%-settlement developed. However, the real ground movements due to tunnelling take place before the tunnel face reaches, and converge after the tunnel face passes away. Specially, adjacent buildings along the tunnel line will undergo a great risk by tunneling induced 3D-dynamic wave of deformation. Therefore, the conventional methods of building damage assessment are not effective to evaluate damage of adjacent buildings due to 3D ground movements near tunnel face. In this study, 3-dimensional FEM analyses with parametric study were performed to investigate the limitation of the existing 2D assessment method. Then ground-building interaction induced by tunnelling was analyzed. In addition, 2D assessment methods were extended into the modified assessment method considering 3D-ground movements. The potential damage risk that adjacent building undergo with 3D-dynamic wave of deformation induced by tunnelling is estimated using newly developed 3D assessment method. The method involves a computer program which is able to predict and assess damage risk of adjacent buildings due to 3D-ground movements near tunnel face. The developed program (Settlement Risk Management System; SRMS 2001) can be effectively used in a decision making process within the framework of risk assessment during tunnelling. The suggested 3D assessment method and the developed program(SRMS 2001) was validated against the results measured using an available field case study. For the estimation of influence factors for building damage, deflection ratio and horizontal strain estimation charts were developed considering the effect of relative location between tunnel and building. These charts are able to be used as a simple and economic tool at the design and construction stage.
