In case of the construction of curved beam bridges, the transition corves have to be inserted in the beam to ensure the safe passing of the cars without tremble caused by the suddenly changing the radii between the straight and curved segments. From this viewpoint, the studies on the statics and dynamics of the curved beam with transient corves are not only basic but also practice, which supply the design data for the civil engineering structures. This paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beam with transient corves. The governing differential equations, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and torsional inertia, are derived as the non-dimensional forms for the out-of-plane free vibrations of linearly elastic curved beam of uniform stiffness and constant mass per unit arc length. The governing differential equations are applied into the beams with both the third parabolic and clothoid transient corves with hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped ends. Prior to solve the differential equations, the numerical differentiation is used to calculate the coefficients of the governing differential equations and then, the Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods are used, respectively, to perform the integration of the governing differential equations and compute the eigenvalues of the equations namely, natural frequencies. Comparisons are made between frequencies computed using the present analysis and those computed with the finite element program ADINA. The lowest four natural frequencies are presented in the Figures and Tables as four functions of non-dimensional system parameters opening angle, slenderness ratio, stiffness and shear parameters. Also the effect of transient geometries such as the third parabola and clothoid on natural frequencies are reported. Typical mode shapes of the deformations and cross-sectional load distributions are presented in Figures. Experimental studies are performed to validate the theoretical results for the laboratory scaled aluminum, third parabolic transition beams with the hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped ends. Experimental results of the first four natural frequencies are agreed closely with those predicted by theory developed herein. The mathematical model and numerical methods presented in this paper for computing the natural frequencies and mode shapes of curved beams with transient corves are efficient, reliable and robust in the practical range of non-dimensional system parameters. It is expected that the theories and numerical methods developed in this study can be utilized in the civil engineering field especially in curved beam designs.
