Poly(trimethylene terephthalate)(PTT) fibers was annealed by passing on the plate heater to illuminate the effects of annealing on the morphological structure and physical properties with varying the treatment temperature and time. The fibers were analyzed by using X-ray diffractometer, DMA, polarized light microscope, DSC, and density gradient column, in order to determine the size of crystallites, degree of crystallization, dynamic viscoelastic response, birefringence, T_g, and the fine structure of crystalline and amorphous regions. The results were used for the explanations of mechanical properties, dyeability for disperse dye, and the behaviors on weight loss finishing with alkaline solution of PTT fibers. X-ray diffraction curves exhibited a peak at 2θ=15.6° representing the crystals developed along the (010) plane and the peak intensity became stronger with increases in the temperature and time, and that indicates that the crystallites grew to the more severe conditions. The crystallinity determined by density measurement were also increased with increases in temperature and time. Those behaviors were more predominantly dependent on the temperature increase than on the time. With the increases of the temperature and time, the dynamic viscoelastic behaviors were analyzed to be a small reduction in tan δ_(max) and large reduction in T_(max)(tan δ). The birefringence and T_g were reduced also remaining the melting temperature same. The results proposed that the molecular chains in armorphous region were transfered into the crystalline region resulting the remained chains relaxed through the thermal heat treatment in the absence of extension. The mechanical properties were observed to be no significant changes in tensile strength and elongation at break, but a small enhance and reduction in initial modulus and shrinkage in hot water. The dyeability for disperse dye enhanced dramatically, for example, a satisfactory degree of exhaustion was obtained by dyeing at 95℃ for 30 mins with the PTT fibers heat treated at 180℃. The weight loss in alkaline solution was two times more rapid for the PTT annealed at 200℃ than the control samples. The kinetics of hydrolysis was confirmed that the hydrolysis of the PTT fibers in the alkaline solution was started from the surface of the fibers and selective to the amorphous region in continuation, on the basis of the results of the increase in crystallinity and the decrease in dye uptake at the initial stage of the hydrolysis.
