Aiming industrialization of the processes for carbon fibrous materials, a petroleum based isotropic pitch(PIP) and a naphthalene derived mesophase pitch (NMP) were spun into short fiber by melt-blown spinning technology, and subsequent experiments were performed for preparations of the targeting materials. The melt-blown pitch fibers from PIP were followed by oxidative stabilization, steam activation, adsorption tests for gases or liquids for adsorptive filters. The NMP fibers spun were oxidatively stabilized, carbonized, and finally graphitized for anode applications of Li ion secondary battery. The processing parameters for the spinning were air velocity, die temperature, and flow rate of the pitch within the ranges of experimental tolerances. The diameters of 5-20㎛ fibers were feasible under controlled conditions and a preferred diameter of 10㎛ were obtained at flow rate of 0.17 g/min·hole and at die temperature of 290℃ with stable spinnability. The efficient temperature range of oxidative stabilization was recognized as -80 to +80 from the softening point measured. The oxygen uptake in the stabilization process converted aliphatic side chains into the carbonyl groups. As stabilization further proceeded, the more ether and carboxylic acid groups were formed through the oxidations of aldehyde and primary alcohol, and then the carboxylic acid was dehydrated to be aromatic anhydride. The weight loss of the oxidized fiber through steam activation was proportional to activation temperature or to activation time independently. The adsorption isotherms of the nitrogen on the ACFs were constructed at 77K and analyzed to be as Type I consisting of micropores mainly. The specific surface area was ranged 850-1897 ㎡/g from pores with diameter range of 5.8-14.1 Å, with the larger value from the more severe activation condition. The larger the surface area, the higher the adsorption rate of methylene blue on the ACFs was obtained and it was more predominant at initial stage. The behavior was considered as the larger molecular weight comparing with other adsorbents experimented. Heating rate for stabilization of pitch fibers affected the morphological structure of the carbonized and graphitized fibers. Radial, radial-random and skin-core cross-sectional structure of the fibers were observed at the respective heating rate of 2℃/min, 5℃/min and 10℃/min. Most crystalline structure of graphite was obtained from the fiber stabilized at heating rate of 10℃/min exhibiting the best anode performance with 400 mAh/g of capacitance and 96.8% of charge/discharge efficiency. The basic studies as mentioned opened the entrances of the process conditions for targeting properties.
