Advances of high-definition television(HDTV) and personal computers call for the mutual conversion between interlaced signal and progressive signal. One of the application is to display the interlaced standard definition television(SDTV) on progressive HDTV. Therefore, deinterlacing which is known as an interlaced to progressive conversion has been recently required and investigated. In this dissertation, we propose two new deinterlacing algorithms considering motion information. The first proposed scheme is a hybrid-type deinterlacing algorithm combining motion compensation and spatial edge-dependent interpolation. In order to reduce the unreliability of motion estimation, two frames with same parity are used for motion estimation. In the case with local motion, zooming, and object deformation, failure of global motion compensation is determined by comparing adaptive threshold with the difference of motion compensated frames. In the region where global motion compensation fails, local motion compensation or spatial interpolation is selectively used. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. The second proposed scheme is a deinterlacing algorithm based on an image reconstruction. In order to reduce the difficulty caused by local motion in the reconstruction procedure, we segment an image into a global motion dominant region, a local motion dominant region, and a region where the motion compensation is not useful. Then image reconstruction is applied to each region independently. A regularized iterative reconstruction algorithm is adopted to overcome the ill-posedness problem resulting from inaccurate motion information. Since the error caused by inaccurate motion information is different in each image, the regularization parameters are determined adaptively according to this error in each cannel. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm produce better quantitative, and visually pleasing results than the conventional approaches.
