The objectives of this paper are to demonstrate degradation phenomena through ambient sintering-process, improve degradation characteristics with SiO_(2) addition and predict degradation phenomena as a function of degradation test time in ZnO varistors. The ZnO varistors used in this investigation were fabricated by standard ceramic techniques. Especially, the ambient sintering-process was performed at the extraordinary electrical-furnace which was equipped with the vacuum system. Gases used in sintering-process were oxygen, nitrogen, argon and air. By using XRD and SEM, the phase and microstructure of sample were analyzed respectively. Particularly, quantitative analysis and distribution of elements existing in the microstructure of ZnO ceramic varistors were performed by using EPMA. The conditions of DC degradation test were 115±2℃ for 0, 2, 4, 8 and 13 h respectively. Current-voltage analysis was used to determine the nonlinear coefficients(α). Frequency analysis was accomplished to the understanding of electrical properties as DC degradation test. From the investigation through ambient sintering-process, it is found that ZnO varistors sintered in the atmosphere of oxygen showed better degradation properties than in the atmosphere of others at the DC degradation test. This result means that the degradation phenomenon of ZnO varistors is caused by the migration of interstitial zinc ions which is purposed by atomic defect model. At the result of the experiment with SiO_(2) addition, degradation characteristics were improved as the amount of SiO_(2) addition increased. And, the degradation phenomenon of ZnO ceramic varistors as a function of degradation test time showed the form of exponential function.
