English and the speech of the United States are one language. The past history of English on the two sides of the Atlantic begins with Elizabethan English transported to the new continent world in the early 17th century. American English(A.E.) has developed in different ways in accordance with geographical, and social surroundings of America. Gradually a distinctive American English grew up and become no longer a colonial variant but an equal partner with British English(B.E). There are the differences between British English and American English in pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. The results of this study can be sumariged as follows; In pronunciation, There are conservation (archaism), spelling pronunciation, nasal twang and stress in the feature of pronunciation in American English. The factors of arcaism disappeared in British English are preserved in American English : for example [a:], [□], [e], [h] sound, also spelling pronunciation is strenthened and assimilation of nasal sound occurs frequently in American English, In stress, American English has a strong form and tends to stress the first syllable rather than British English. In vocabulary, Generally, the archaisms that are no use in British English are broadly use in American English and there are meaningful differences in according to differences of political, economic, social, cultural and educational system. The differences of vocabulary are researched in the following three parts : The common word-stock, common ideas but different words and words with no counterparts. The common ideas but different words is very important in learning, so I investigate 626 words in reference documents and these words are became a foundation of investigating counterparts on vocabulary in current English textbooks of middle school and high school in Korea. In spelling, English is belong to language with differences between spelling and pronunciation. The tendency to ommit or simplfy the spelling is noticeablely stronger in American English than in British English, and American spelling tends to closer to the actual pronunciation. The differences between British English and, American English can be summarized as follows; In consonants, [-xion]-[-ction], [-ce]-[-se], [-c-]-[-k-], [-ll]-[-l], [-gramme]-[-gram] etc. In vowels, [-our]-[-or], [-re]-[-er], [-ou-]-[-o-, -u-], [-ae-]-[-e-], [e(n)-]-[i(n)-] etc. In grammar, British English is normal, American English is descriptive in speech. simplication by omission and contraction is a feature of American English. In addition, there is greater tendency for diversion of part of speech in American English. The characteristics of grammar in American English when compared with British English can be summarized as follows; plural and 's'-genitive in the use of Noun, usage of pronoun 'one', adverbial use of adjective, omission or insertion of definite article, diversion of speech in verb, and usage of verb get, have, usage of auxiliary will and shall, use of different preposition, use of particle in adverb, omission of conjunction etc. In particular, I observed the differences between British English and American English in current English textbooks of middle school and high school in Korea, chiefly focusing on vocabulary, which is used together with as British English word rate is more than a third. As result of research, I suggest as follows; First, I think it is good that English textbooks contain index and usage on vocabulary.
