Morphology and DNA systematics are made to discuss systematics, phylogeny and taxonomic revision of tribe Linnaeeae(Caprifoliaceae) from 272 previously described taxa which belong to six genera, Zabelia, Abelia, Kolkwitzia, Vesalea, Dipelta and Linnaea. Tribe Linnaeeae is well distinguished from other tribes by inflorescence, fruit, sepal, corolla, stamen and nectary, The tribe is further divided into two subtribes, subtribe Zabeliinae and subtribe Linnaeinae, based on stem and bark morphology, anatomical characteristics of wood, inflorescence and corolla type, degree of fusion of filament and corolla in flower. Within the tribe, six genera, Zabelia, Abelia, Vesalea, Kolkwitzia, Dipelta and Linnaea, are recognized mainly on the basis of life form, pedicel length, morphology of ovary and subtending bract and characteristics of sepal. However, Symphoricarpos and Heptacodium, of which taxonomic position are in debate by various authors, should be excluded from the tribe because these two genera have the indeterminate inflorescence in contrast to other members of the tribe having determinate inflorescence. Major evolutionary modification of inflorescence within the tribe seems to have occurred to the direction of reduction from thyrosal compound dichasium appeared in both the axil and apex of stem to dichasium, then to solitary at the apex of stem only. Subtribe Linnaeinae has solitary flower with bract on peduncle through the reduction of two lateral pedicels of dichasium, however, subtribe Zabeliinae has modified dichasium with two pedicels which lack of subtending bract through the reduction of central pedicel of dichasium. Subtending bract, which is one of distinctive characteristics of the tribe, shows diverse morphology and the number of bracts is closely related to the number of flowers in the inflorescence. Especially, subtending bract of Dipelta expands after flowering and subtending bract of Linnaea becomes more or less succulent with large glandular hairs, which is very peculiar characteristics seems to be related with seed dispersal. In addition, expansion of sepal after flowering seems also to be related with disperse of seed by wind which is common within the tribe. However, Kolkwitzia amabils and Zabelia triflora have long or hispid hair in either calyx tube or sepal instead of expanded bract or sepal to facilitate seed dispersal. Cytologically, it is assumed that two subtribes have independent evolutionary lineages became the basic chromosome number of subtribe Linnaeinae is x=8 and that of subtribe Zabeliinae is x=9. Pollen characteristics including morphology, wall sculpture and annulus support two subtribal system well : subtribe Linnaeinae with spheroidal shape, echinate sculpture, no annulus and subtribe Zabeliinae with subprolate shape, psilate wall and well defined annulus. However, the tribe is not well separated from other tribe palynologically. It is more probable that those taxa which show high levels of variation of pollen size and aperture number within same individual might be hybrid origin except for Vesalea coriacea. The present distribution pattern and fossil records of the tribe indicate that at the early tertiary of Cenozoic era the genus Abelia distributed the whole Eurasian Continent, the genus Vesalea distributed in North America, the genus Linnaea distributed widely over all the Northern Hemisphere and genus Zabelia distributed at least in central Asia and East Asia at the early tertiary of Cenozoic era. Kolkwitzia, Dipelta distributed also over the area of China at early tertiary of Cenozoic era. It seems that the incidences of glaciation during quaternary of Cenozoic era cause the extinction of taxa in most regions and hence the refugia results the present disjunctive distribution. Cladistic analysis with ITS sequence data as well as 38 morphological characters indicate strong monophyly of tribe Linnaeeae and well separated from tribe Lonicereae. Therefore, the two tribe should be treated as different tribe. Within tribe Linnaeeae, two major monophyletic groups are well recognized which correspond to two subtribes in this study. The result also indicates that genus Symphoricorpos is included to tribe Lonicereae and genus Heptacodium is either included to tribe Lonicereae or treated separate tribe. In conclusion, tribe Linnaeeae is divided into two subtribes : subtribe Linnaeinae and subtribe Zabeliinae (subtribe nov.). Subtribe Linnaeinae includes five genera which are two monotypic genera Linnaea and Kolkwitzia, Abelia with six species, Vesalea with two species, Dipelta with three species and subtribe Zabeliinae has Zabelia with six species only. In total, tribe Linnaeeae is composed of 19 species which belongs to two subtribes and six genera.
