Sanjo was originated from a part of southern(Jeon_Nam Province) shamanism music and it was affected by the melody of Sinawi and Pansori, Gayagum sanjo was the first sanjo introduced in the end of 19th century, after that various types of sanjo with other musical instruments, such as Heagum, Daegum, Piri, Geomungo, Ajaeng etc. we appeared and they have been played popularly by traditional music performers now. Usually we are grouping today's popular Heagum sanjo into following four composers, Han-Beom-Soo, Ji-Young-Hee, Seo-Yong-Seok and Kim-Young-Jae. Among them, Kim-Young-Jae's heagum sanjo is outstanding in terms of various 'JO's and great transformation of melody by adding 'Utmori' and 'Danmori' on its structures of rhythms. In this paper I tried to find out the similar and varied melodies between Kim-Young-Jae's and Ji-Yung-Hee's Heagum sanjo, these two composers are in relationship of master and pupil. As a consequence of this analysis, we can classify into following five kinds of variation patterns. (1) similar melody which was moved down to under minor three (2) similar melody which has the same front part (3) similar melody which has the same rear part (4) similar melody which has the opposite rhythm each other (5) Others Above five patterns show that Kim-Young-Jae's Heagum sanjo was constructed with variation of Ji-Young-Hee's rhythm The followings are the methods of variation in common, which were approved by comparison and analysis of similar melody in variation patterns. 1) Varying ornament grace variously and also changing ornament grace into new note which has time value 2) When playing same note repeatedly, doing variation by inserting higher note, upper three and five, as a passing note.. 3) Expanding rhythm by adding new varied melody on Ji-Young-Hee's melody. 4) Doing variation with major notes reduced and removed minor melodies from Ji-Young-Hee's melody. We can understand Kim-Young-Jae has composed new sanjo through varying rhythm which was handed down from his master, Ji-Young-Hee. As a result of this comparison and analysis of these two sanjos, I could understand the variation pattern and a part of method in traditional music. Through this understanding I expect to give some helps to everyone as well as myself who want to understand the formation process of our traditional music and its future trend by finding out logical rules which are included in sanjo.
