Due to negative electron affinity(NEA), immunity to chemical attack, hardness, and very high thermal conductivity (20W/cmK), diamond has been regarede as an excellent material for field emitter and a coating material for the field emitter, especially for field emission flat panel display applications. In this thesis study, using microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD), diamond films were grown on Ti-coated glass substrates at low temperatures around 500 ℃ for the application to the practical field emitters. The properties of the diamond films were characterized using Raman, X-ray spectrocopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Raman spectrum by fitting the Lorentzian distribution, of the diamond films, could tell us whether a synthesized film was nano-crystalline diamond, single-crystalline diamond, amorphous carbon, or glacial carbon. The X-ray diffraction spectroscopy was used to confirm the crystalline diamond formation, from the two peaks at 43.9˚and 75.3˚which represent the diamond (111) plane and (220) planes. Electron emission was observed at a turn-on field below 18 V/㎛. Field emission characteristics are discussed in terms of the crystalline properties. An important finding from this study is that, if diamond film contain a non-diamond impurity such as graphite or diamond-like carbon, the emission properties improve drastically.
