Monodispersed composite latex particles with size of ca. 300nm, which consist of n-butyl acrylate as a soft phase and methyl methacrylate as a hard phase with different morphologies, were synthesized by seeded multi-stage emulsion polymerization. Three types of composite latex particles including random-, core/shell-, and gradient-type particles were obtained by adopting different monomer feeding methods during emulsion polymerization. Effect of polymerization variables on the particle morphology and grafting efficiency of Poly(butyl acrylate)/Poly(methyl methacrylate)(PBA/PMMA) core/shell latex was examined. Also, effect of PBA/PMMA latex particle morphology on the mechanical and theological properties of toughened PMMA was investigated. Grafting efficiency of core/shell latex particles was influenced by polymerization parameters. Grafting efficiency in the range of 30% to 90% was obtained. Interfacial adhesion and dispersity between rubbery particles and the PMMA matrix was one of the important factors in toughening of rubber toughened PMMA. The impact strength of PMMA/rubber blend generally increases as the rubber content is increased. Among three different particles, the gradient type shows better impact strength. No significant variation of theological property of PMMA/rubber blends was observed for the different rubber particle morphology.
