The present study explores the way foreign language learners can better remember words in the target language. In an English as a foreign language context where English is not used as a dominant language, dictionaries are one of the most accessible and helpful references. These days, there are many different kinds of dictionaries available, but there do not seem to be many empirical studies on the effectiveness of different kinds of dictionaries on word retention. The theoretical background of the present study is based on cognitive psychological theory on memory and applied linguistic research on vocabulary acquisition. Craik and Lockhart (1972) and many cognitive psychologists argued that the information that is deeply processed would be retained for a longer period of time. The deeper processing involves more cognitive effort and elaboration of the stimuli. Therefore, the two hypotheses of this study are that groups who used the monolingual dictionaries will outperform the bilingual dictionary groups in remembering the meaning of words due to more elaboration while processing in the target language. Also, the paper dictionary groups will outperform the electronic dictionary groups due to more effort to search for the word. To test these hypotheses, an experiment was conducted on vocabulary learning with four different kinds of dictionary. 117 Korean college students were asked to study 25 low frequency words with one of the following dictionaries: English -Korean Paper, English- Korean Electronic, English- English Paper, and English- English electronic dictionaries. A 2 (Language) × 2 (Presentation Mode) experimental design was used. The languages are monolingual and bilingual dictionaries and the presentation modes are paper and electronic dictionaries. After the learning phase, the subjects took posttest 1 immediately and posttest 2 7-10 days later. The results indicated that the bilingual dictionary groups outperformed the monolingual dictionary groups significantly on posttest 1 and 2 (F (1, 101)=15.85, p=.000). Also, the paper dictionary groups did better than the electronic dictionary groups (F (1,101)=4.80, p=.031). Interestingly, tests by language shows a significant interaction effect F (1, 101)=4.05, p=.047) since the bilingual groups showed a much bigger score difference between two tests than the monolingual groups. When the subjects were divided by their proficiency, the high proficiency group significantly did better than the low proficiency group (F (1, 101)=5.75), p=.018). Also, the high proficiency group did not show much difference between monolingual and bilingual groups, but the low proficiency group did. It implies that the high proficiency group was not much affected by the kind of language they used while learning, but the low proficiency group was. Furthermore, data from a questionnaire were collected. First, the questionnaire surveyed the students’ actual use of dictionaries, their evaluation of their proficiency, and their evaluation of the dictionaries. It was found that students used the bilingual paper dictionary most often even though they regarded monolingual dictionaries as the most helpful for improving their English proficiency. The subjects also considered that paper dictionaries are more helpful for retention of words than electronic dictionaries. In conclusion, bilingual dictionaries seem more effective than monolingual ones and paper dictionaries more effective than electronic dictionaries in retention of words. However, it cannot be a definitive answer because tests by language interaction effect show that the monolingual dictionary groups forgot less than the bilingual dictionary groups between two tests. Thus, the monolingual dictionaries also have potential to be effective for longer retention.
