It is very urgent for our modern fashion designers to approach the traditional aesthetics and thereby, develop the designs integrating aesthetics and pragmatism through preservation and re-creation of the traditional art. The purpose of this study is to reorganize the symbolism connoted in the folk paintings into a modern image and thereby, suggest the possibility of reinterpreting and re-creating the traditional costumes into their modern counterparts. To this end, preceding studies and modern fashion data were extensively reviewed to examine how our traditional aesthetics has been inherited and developed. Our folk paintings as single theme are in no way inferior to other genres of art or trends in terms of international competitiveness. Such an argument is well supported by the fact that they have been reinterpreted and thereby, applied in various artistic costume exhibitions including S · F · A · A collection since 1990. Based on the theoretical reviews, six folk paintings were sampled to be applied to costume production. The ultimate goal of this production was to express our people's spiritual world. Our people's conceptual desires and spirit of the time were visualized in the folk paintings. Likewise, the researcher attempted to apply our people's spiritual world expressed in the folk paintings to an other independent genre of art or fashion. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; Folk paintings can be used as themes for formative artworks also in this age of information, because they can provide for incessant sources of inspiration and information for visual arts. If the artworks target the world markets, they may publicize our people's inside world to the world consumers, while highlighting our excellent culture on the world stage. In addition, folk paintings have various formative values. Therefore, we need to pay our attention to such values. Canvas compositions, colors, sources and forms featured by the folk paintings are innumerable enough to be referred to in paintings and sculptures as well as in fashion, image video arts, performances and other various genres. Our folk paintings are very unique. Our folk paintings are quite differentiated from not only Western folk paintings but also Chinese or Japanese ones. Through this study, it could be confirmed that our folk paintings have more diverse symbolicities than any other nation' folk paintings. The symbolic elements of our folk painting or colors and sources provide us with a variety of motifs, because our folk paintings are very unique. In other words, the Korean folk paintings are not unprecedented in terms of uniqueness, and therefore, they may be applied to fashion designs only to improve the international competitiveness of our fashion products. It was also confirmed through this study that the symbolic folk paintings could be applied to our modern costume designs in order to develop an emotional fashion design integrating Western and Eastern aesthetics. For example, many works designed for overseas and domestic fashion shows have found some clues from our traditional folk paintings, which suggests that it is possible and feasible to develop unique designs by borrowing the ideas from the folk paintings. This study may be concluded as follows; In order to breathe a traditional sense of aesthetics into our modern fashion, it is necessary to fundamentally rework our traditional aesthetics just beyond its simple re-creation based on correct understanding of our history, view of world, religions, arts and thoughts. If so, our people's aesthetic sense would be enriched, while our cultural root be more solid. Lastly, it is hoped that this study will contribute somewhat to globalization of our fashion industry.
